While there have been plenty lots of stars starting new relationships, getting engaged and even tying the knot this year, there are also those who are calling it quits.
Our love languages are changing, which can make it more and more difficult to navigate relationships in 2023 – even for celebrities. Whether they’ve fallen out of love or lust, these are the stars that decided to break up this year.
Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn
Swifties now know that the Lover album won’t sound the same anymore, as Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have split after six years together.
According to People, “personality differences” ultimately led to the couple’s break.
An exclusive source reportedly told the outlet that the multiple Grammy winner and English actor “had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together.” However, they “weren’t the right fit for one another.”
Throughout their relationship, the then-pair has kept details of their romance private. Although Alwyn has collaborated with Swift on songs from her album Folklore, Evermore and “Sweet Nothings” from Midnights, the Conversations With Friends actor “struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public,” says the insider. “The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”
A week before news broke of her split from Alwyn, she reportedly surprised the audience while on tour by swapping out Folklore track “Invisible String,” with “The 1,” a song about a lost love and remembering the good times.
“They are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe,” the insider adds. “They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now.”

Eva Marcille and Michael Sterling
After almost four years of marriage, The Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Eva Marcille has filed for divorce from Michael Sterling, according to People.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, but sometimes life takes your journey in a direction you were not expecting,” Marcille tells the outlet. “Our children remain our biggest priority and the eight and a half years we have spent together will always be cherished. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Marcille and Sterling, who got married in October 2018, share two children together: four-year-old Michael Jr. and three-year-old Maverick. Marcille also has a nine-year-old daughter, Marley Rae, from a previous marriage.

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth
Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon and former talent agent Jim Toth are getting a divorce. The Legally Blonde actor reportedly took to Instagram to share that they’re calling it quits after 12 years of marriage.
“We have some personal news to share” Witherspoon wrote. “It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce.”
She added that they “have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
The former couple share a 10-year-old son, Tennessee. Witherspoon also has two kids from her previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.
An insider also told Page Six that “there’s no big scandal or drama” and that Witherspoon and Toth “essentially became co-parents and don’t really have any romantic feelings for each other anymore.”

Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix
Beloved Vanderpump Rules couple Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix have called it quits, according to TMZ, who also reports that he allegedly cheated with co-star Raquel Leviss.
Sources told the outlet that Madix found out about the alleged infidelity and ended things with Sandoval shortly after. It’s hard to say if these rumours are true, as Madix was spotted celebrating Sandoval and his band as recently as Wednesday, March 1. Despite that, sources say that the beloved couple has been rocky for a while now.
The news is particularly shocking considering a large part of this season of VPR so far has revolved around Leviss wanting to hook up with the other Tom, Tom Schwartz.
Neither Sandoval nor Madix have confirmed the rumours, but Madix reportedly deleted her Instagram account.

Drew Sidora and Ralph Pittman
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Drew Sidora and Ralph Pittman are officially ending their marriage after 9 years, according to People. Pittman reportedly petitioned for divorce on February 27th, while Sidora lodged her own petition just an hour earlier. Fans of the show will remember that Drew and Ralph had a rocky marriage, with rumours of infidelity and questions around Ralph’s mysterious trip to Tampa.
“Love is a beautiful thing,” Pittman told the outlet. “Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to move on to our next chapters, independent of each other. Drew and I have decided to file for divorce. We have three amazing young children, and their mindset and growth is what is most important. As we navigate this difficult time, I ask that you please respect our privacy.”

Danielle Olivera and Robert Sieber
Summer House star Danielle Olivera has confirmed her split from Robert Sieber, her boyfriend of two-and-a-half years.
“We broke up in November – it’s still hard to say out loud,” Olivera told E! News. “It’s sad, but I’m finding my happy slowly and surely. I have a lot of really great friends, even the girls on the show. They’ve been so, so nice to me.”
“There’s still a lot of love there and mutual respect, but it just wasn’t working out,” Olivera added. “If we can’t be happy together, then we have to find our happy separately.”

Emily Ratajkowski and Eric André
Just four days after going Instagram official, Emily Ratajkowski posted a cryptic TikTok that left fans wondering if she and Eric André broke it off, as Elite Daily reports. In the clip’s caption, Ratajkowski suggested that she ended a recent “situationship.”
“What should you do when a situationship ends? Start another one,” the model wrote, not clarifying which “situationship” she was referring to.
Fans reportedly flooded the comments section, speculating that she had called off her romance with André.

Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun
It looks like Avril Lavigne may have once again said see you later boy, as her rep has confirmed her breakup with Mod Sun with E! News. The news arrives almost one year after the pair got engaged, but Mod Sun’s rep claims that the artist has no idea of his reported split with the Canadian pop punk icon.
“They were together and engaged as of three days ago when he left for tour so if anything has changed, that’s news to him,” Mod Sun’s rep said.
Lavigne and Mod Sun first met in 2020 when they were working together on her album, aptly titled Love Sux.

Mya Allen and Oliver Gray
Summer House star Mya Allen has confirmed that she and Oliver Gray have split after he filmed some scenes for season 7 of the show, Us Weekly reports. The pair reportedly called it quits back in September after over a year of dating, Allen detailed on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
“He wasn’t who I thought he was,” Allen said, to which Cohen responded, “That’s a shame.” Allen went on to say that it was a “bad breakup,” and she’s since “blocked” Gray.
Gray was Allen’s first new romance after her breakup with ex-fiancé and celebrity chef Kwame Onwuachi.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly
It may be Valentine’s Day, but this February 14th isn’t full of love for everyone – especially not for Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. As Page Six reports, Fox sparked breakup rumours after she captioned an Instagram photo with a cryptic lyric from Beyoncé’s “Pray You Catch Me.” “You can taste the dishonesty,” Fox wrote. “It’s all over your breath.” Following the post, Fox deleted her Instagram account.
More recently, a source told PEOPLE, that following a “big fight” over the Super Bowl weekend, Fox “took her ring off” even though “they haven’t officially called off the engagement.” Now, Fox is “very upset” and “won’t speak to” MGK.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott
Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott have reportedly called it quits. Their on-again-off-again relationship is, well, off again, according to PEOPLE, who spoke with a source that says Jenner “is not with Travis right now.” The source explains that the Kylie Cosmetics mogul and the “Sicko Mode” artist are simply in different places.
“Kyle is very focused on her kids and her business,” the source said. “She is not a big partier. Travis is the opposite. He likes to party. They definitely have different focuses. They always did.”
“There is a reason they never got married,” the insider continued, explaining that Jenner constantly “flips out” in response to cheating rumours. “It’s always been very up and down. And they have never even lived together. They have always had separate homes.”

Shannon Beador and John Janssen
The Real Housewives of Orange County star Shannon Beador and her boyfriend of three-and-a-half years, John Janssen, have called it quits. Beador opened up to PEOPLE about how Janssen ended their relationship, saying that she “was blindsided by the breakup” when he broke up with her just one week after they finished filming season 17 of the beloved Bravo reality series.
“All I can do is repeat in my head what he said to me while we were filming,” Beador explains. “We were in a great place. But seven days later, when the cameras were down, it was a completely different story. He told me he was done with the relationship. And to hear what he said to me then was absolutely devastating.”
Janssen also spoke with PEOPLE, saying that it was a “super hard” decision to make. “I’ve been in pain over it,” he added. “It’s sad because I love Shannon very much. I have loved her more deeply than any woman in my life. She’s one of a kind; so funny and generous and full of life and adventurous. We have a connection that’s unlike anything I’ve ever had. And I know that for as long as I live, I’ll never meet anyone like her again. But that doesn’t mean we’re right for each other for the rest of our lives.”

Ashley Darby and Luke Gulbranson
The Bravo crossover of our dreams has come to an end: it looks like The Real Housewives of Potomac star Ashley Darby and Summer House alum Luke Gulbranson have called it quits after their short-lived romance. The pair had recently deleted pictures of each other off of their Instagram accounts, but Darby confirmed the end of their relationship on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, according to People.
“Luke and I are not romantically involved anymore,” Darby said. She then continued on to suggest that her divorce with Michael Darby was the cause of the breakup.
“It was my situation with Michael that affected Luke and I,” Darby explained, adding that her and Michael “have a really hard time” separating and co-parenting.”

Emily Ratajkowski and Pete Davidson
While these two only sparked relationship questions toward the end of 2022, Emily Ratajkowski recently opened up about her dating troubles. Their romance was rumoured to be fizzling out at the end of December, but as Us Weekly notes, Ratajkowski took to a new episode of her very own podcast, High Low, where she detailed her dating woes, saying that she attracts “the worst men,” once again hinting at their split.
“That’s what I hate with dating … men in particular,” Em Rata said. “They’re like, ‘OK, yes, you’re special. You’ve done it.’ And they love it and love it, and then slowly they get emasculated and … don’t know what to do with those feelings, and then they resent you.”
“They start to tear you down, and then you’re back to square one,” she added. “And it’s so f**ked up and unfair, because I feel like a lot of men who truly think they want a strong woman actually don’t know how to handle it and … what it means for their own identity.”
