With Halloween returning to a bit of normalcy this year, we can get back to keeping an eye out for hilarious (or ghoulish) costumes from our favourite A-listers. We’ve rounded up some of the all-time best — and worst — celeb costumes to give you some inspiration on the dos (and don’ts!) this spooky season.

The best: Harry Styles as Elton John
Honestly, this costume choice is so iconic. One successful Brit singer paid tribute to another Brit legend in 2019 when Harry Styles went all out as Elton John for Halloween. The "Watermelon Sugar" singer donned an identical sparkly Dodgers uniform that John once wore more than 45 years ago when performing in New York.

The worst: Ben Platt as… a man from the 1970s
Uninspired and unimaginative. We're not quite sure what the Dear Evan Hansen star was thinking back in 2017, but this lazy 1970s-inspired outfit didn't win any "best costume" awards, that's for sure. Here's hoping he ups the ante this year!

The best: The Weeknd and Bella Hadid as Beetlejuice and Lydia
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! The Weeknd and then-girlfriend Bella Hadid turned heads in this ghoulishly accurate recreation of the Tim Burton classic starring Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. If Heidi Klum is the queen of Halloween, we're starting to think The Weeknd is her male counterpart.

The worst: Kim Kardashian as a mermaid
Frankly, we're shocked that the beauty icon and reality star didn't go all out in something a little more... outrageous. This uninspiring mermaid costume looks like it came straight off the rack from Party City. Even the blonde wig isn't done up in any particular style. Oh well, maybe Kim K just wasn't feeling Halloween that year.

The best: Lupita Nyong’o as Dionne from Clueless
The Oscar winner understood the assignment in 2019 when she wowed guests with this iconic Clueless ensemble at Heidi Klum's annual Halloween bash. But did we expect any less from the star, who certainly knows her way around a red carpet? As if!

The worst: Kyle MacLachlan dressed as kale
We're not sure if Twin Peaks alum was inspired to go the opposite of Lady Gaga's legendary meat dress back in 2018, or if he simply just reached into his fridge for last-minute costume ideas, but we're not loving the end result. Covered in wilted kale (over a brown outfit, no loess), Kyle MacLachlan's costume should have stayed in the crisper. Adding further insult to the whole affair? He wore this to Heidi "Queen of Halloween" Klum's annual spooky bash. The nerve!

The best: Nina Dobrev as Billie Eilish
We love when celebs dress up as other celebs — so meta — but we appreciate it even more when it's perfectly executed. Vampire Diaries alum Nina Dobrev channeled the stylings of pop star Billie Eilish as her costume. From the dark tear tracks to the pose (and face!), the Canadian actress really got into her Halloween character. And she did it so, so well.

The worst: Jennifer Lopez as a skeleton
J.Lo is no novice when it comes to the miracle of professional makeup, and the diva clearly took full advantage of her glam squad when it came time to go all out for Halloween. Though we wish she might have gotten a little more into character with her wardrobe — haven’t we seen that cleavage-baring gown before? We can’t deny she looks fierce with her day-of-the-dead style glam, but we would have loved a little more creativity in her outfit. Mix it up, J.Lo!

The best: Jessica Biel as Justin Timberlake
Jessica Biel nailed her costume the year when she decided to dress up as hubby Justin Timberlake — specifically from his N*SYNC days. The real JT went out as a microphone. Together, they crushed Halloween with their A+ costumes.

The worst: Taylor Swift as a “Pegacorn”
This costume just felt uninspired, especially considering few celebrities commit to a party theme more than Taylor Swift (ahem, Fourth of July Hamptons bash, anyone?). It’s not that we don’t appreciate the effort of zipping into a giant unicorn costume, or the obvious points earned for not going with the crowd and opting for some sexy-cop or sultry librarian, but could this be the least impressive-looking mythical creature we’ve seen? We’re thinking yes. Better luck next time, T-Swift.

The best: Lisa Rinna as Jennifer Lopez
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Rinna dressed up as Jennifer Lopez for Halloween in 2019, perfectly capturing J.Lo's iconic Versace green dress moment.

The worst: Kim Kardashian and Jonathan Cheban as Sonny and Cher
In theory, this costume has all the makings of a slam dunk: solid outfits, on-point hair and makeup — but somehow, the whole thing just doesn’t land. Call us crazy, but instead of pulling it off as Cher, Kim still just looks like, well, Kim. While we can’t definitively shelf this one as the worst we’ve seen from Kim K., we’re confident this beauty chameleon can do better this year.

The best: Heidi Klum as Jessica Rabbit
Year after year, model Heidi Klum plays host to some of the most epic Halloween parties, setting the bar high with her own elaborate costumes. Spoiler alert: she makes this list more than once, but we’re starting off with her 2015 portrayal of animated bombshell Jessica Rabbit — can you believe that’s Heidi under there?!

The worst: Ariel Winter as a ghost – we think?
We’re not quite sure what the Modern Family alum was thinking when stepping into this second skin mini nurse’s uniform complete with her face painted as some kind of ghost, but the overall effect is underwhelming, to say the least. Throw in the leather combat boots, and we just have no clue what’s going on here.

The best: Kelly Sawyer and Jessica Alba as characters from the film Juno
Year after year, BFFs Kelly Sawyer and Jessica Alba pull out all the stops for Halloween, and 2017 was no exception. Dressed up like characters from the film Juno, Sawyer and Alba nailed it once again.

The worst: Paris Hilton as a Warrior Princess
Don’t quit your day job anytime soon, Paris. We found the DJ and heiress to be less-than-convincing in the role of warrior princess. It seemed like a bit of a stretch to envision the reality TV diva in such a tough role, but hey, at least she wore the costume well. How Paris might have described it? “That’s hot.”

The best: Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford channel disco fever
Mother-daughter power duo Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber are giving us all the Saturday Night Fever feels with their 70s-inspired costumes.

The worst: Jerry Seinfeld and Jessica Seinfeld as a retro racecar driver and diner waitress
We wanted this to work, we really did — but comedic legend Jerry Seinfeld just couldn’t get the laughs with this lackluster costume choice. Sure, his wife looked adorable as a retro diner girl, but next to his vintage-inspired racecar driver costume, the whole thing fell flat.

The best: Gigi Hadid as Sandy from Grease
Gigi Hadid put on her Halloween best for one of Heidi Klum’s legendary parties, and turned up as Sandy from Grease. It seems like a role she was born to play — with her baby-face and blonde locks, she could have given original “Sandy” Olivia Newton John a run for her money! No stranger to rocking the runway with incredible looks, Gigi nailed it with her costume and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with this year!

The worst: Chuck Liddell and Heidi Northcott as Wonderwoman and… ?
Boring is the only way to describe this one. *Yawn*

The best: Bruce Willis and assistant Stephen J. Eads as the twins from The Shining
We can’t get enough of these two as the creepy twin girls from the classic horror film The Shining. Not only do we love that it’s an unexpected pick for two grown men to begin with, but we can’t get over how well they pulled it off! The pair completely committed to their costumes, donning everything from the frilly dress to the white knee socks, and even adding a little something special with their matching (and hilarious by contrast) full beards.

The worst: Kelly Bensimon as a – bunny?
Socialite-turned-reality TV star Kelly Bensimon was clearly all out of ideas — and clothes — when she strapped on some bunny ears and left the house wearing next to nothing for a Halloween party.

The best: Fergie and ex Josh Duhammel as Choupette and Karl Lagerfeld
While still an item, these two knocked this one out of the park, going all out as Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and his beloved cat Choupette.

The worst: Tara Reid as a scantily-clad Mrs. Claus
Why, Tara, why? Our jaws dropped to the floor — and not in a good way — when actress Tara Reid stepped out in her 2016 Halloween costume. What, exactly, this is supposed to be, we still aren’t sure, but going by the Santa hat, we’re guessing it’s something along the lines of Mrs. Claus-gone-wrong.

The best: Emily Ratajkowski as Marge Simpson
Everyone’s favourite sultry model and activist stole the show with this incredible Marge Simpson costume. I mean — full body paint and a towering blue wig? That’s commitment! Did we mention she brought along her very own Homer? We've already had our eye on this style star's fall boots, and seeing how she knocked her last Halloween costume out of the park, we can’t wait to see what she comes up with this year!

The worst: Coco and husband Ice-T
While it's not new for Coco to be risqué, we’re still always surprised to see just how far she takes it. We wish we could find a connection between Coco’s revealing referee outfit and husband Ice-T as Bane in a prison jumper, but we’re just failing to see it. Aside from the fact that these two eccentric lovebirds seem sweet as pie on TV, these costumes left us feeling confused and a little turned off.

The best: Evan Rachel Wood as Magenta
Evan Rachel Woods nailed it as Magenta from the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. The costume pick fit with Woods’ generally-gothic style, and worked out perfectly — we can’t think of a better actress to bring Magenta back to life!

The best: Katy Perry as Hillary Clinton
Who’s that lady in red? It’s Katy Perry dressed as Hillary Clinton, hand in hand with her very own Bill Clinton lookalike. We love the homage and can’t get over just how unrecognizable Katy is! It’s probably a nice change of pace for Perry, who’s often compared to her doppelgangers, actress Zooey Deschanel and figure skater Tessa Virtue — not that day!

The best: Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller as Mario and Luigi
So this may one may not be on the same level as some of the other couples’ costumes on this list, but for what it lacks in creativity, it more than makes up for in its cute-factor. How adorable do these two look?

The best: Adam Lambert as a ghost
Hosting his own Halloween party with a “ghost town” theme in 2015, Adam Lambert was hard to find in the crowd, completely transformed into a native/western-themed spirit for the evening. We love everything from the ghostly makeup and fringed leather wardrobe to the super long white braids and facial hair. And if you were wondering if it really is Adam Lambert under there — check out the bejeweled fingerless gloves — annnd there he is!

The best: Colton Haynes as Princess Fiona
If Heidi Klum is the undisputed queen of Halloween transformations, than Colton Haynes is definitely the king. This isn’t the first total transformation the actor has gone through in the name of Halloween, but it is one of our favourites. Channeling fictional ogre Princess Fiona, Haynes is completely unrecognizable!

The best: Poppy Delevingne as Harley Quinn
At the time, little sister Cara Delevingne had been locked in for the role of Temptress in the blockbuster Suicide Squad and big sis Poppy stepped out to support the film by taking on Margot Robbie’s role of Harley Quinn for Halloween. Getting dolled up as the Joker’s love interest was no small feat, and Poppy credited several glam squad pros with helping her achieve the look — we think it was well worth the effort, don’t you?

The best: Heidi Klum as an elderly woman
We’re finishing strong with another brilliant Halloween transformation from our costume-queen Heidi Klum. Disguised as an elderly woman for the evening, we’re betting many party go-ers in attendance had to do a double take before recognizing the supermodel underneath the costume!
