The early 90s had a young Jennifer Lopez working her moves as one of the much-loved “Fly Girls” on the set of popular sketch show, In Living Color. Pictured here attending a fashion show with her dance squad in 1992, you can definitely see the suiting-trend of the times in full force. While the look overwhelms JLo’s small frame, there’s not much that distracts from her million-dollar smile.

1997 was a big year for Jennifer Lopez — in more ways than one. Not only did she land a breakout role in Selena, but she also got hitched to first husband Ojani Noa — and while the marriage may have lasted less than a year, her portrayal of music icon Selena Quintanilla would launch her acting career and score her some serious respect in the industry. Dressing the part for her early red-carpet days, JLo opted for second-skin gowns that highlighted her killer curves – like the embellished Badgely Mischka gown she wore to the 1997 Academy Awards.

While everyone else was embracing the high-necks, halters and cardigan co-ord trends of the times, Jennifer Lopez opted instead to step out on the Globes red carpet in a second-skin, body-con dress that would later be ranked as one of the best looks of the night. From the cut-out details, one-shoulder design and funky colour-block colouring, this sexy gown was as JLo then as it would be now, and a major sign of (fashion) things to come for the rising star.

If ever there was an outfit that head-to-toe embodied the popular trends of the day, it’s the one JLo stepped out in at the MTV Awards in 1998. From the sequin cropped halter top to the low-rise maxi skirt — and don’t even get us started on the hair clips! While this definitely isn’t our favourite throwback look, we have to give her props for wearing nearly every big trend of the moment at once — and somehow still making it work.

From 1999 to 2001, JLo was involved in one of her most high-profile relationships (though there have been a few — “Bennifer”, anyone?) with Puff Daddy aka Diddy aka Sean Combs – we can’t keep up! On his arm, JLo’s style definitely seemed influence by the glitz and glam of her flashy boyfriend, and the singer stepped out in some of her most iconic outfits during this time. Case in point: the notorious Versace number she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000. Dangerously low-cut in the front with a super-high slit up the center, nearly backless design and sheer, this dress is one of the most recognized style moments – of all-time – for good reason. Love it or hate it, this was a serious “moment” and who better to pull it off than JLo?

Fresh out of her relationship with Sean Combs, JLo wasted no time on the love front. From 2001 to 2003, Jennifer Lopez was married to second husband Chris Judd, with the start of her paparazzi-filled romance with Ben Afleck kicking up around 2002. Amidst a second wedding, box office hits, chart-topping songs and budding new romances, the early 2000’s were anything but boring for JLo, who spent this time experimenting with her style and elevating the trends. While it’s a lot in one shot, we love JLo’s bohemian vibe at the 2001 MTV Awards.

Scaled back from her usual sparkle and flash, Jennifer Lopez turned heads for all the right reasons in a stunning Chanel ball gown at the 2001 Academy Awards. With natural makeup and her hair pulled back, this look was all about keeping it elegant for one of the biggest award night’s of the year. To date, this is still one of our favourite – and most unexpected – red-carpet moments from the typically-glammed-out Jennifer Lopez.

After spending much of 2002 velour tracksuits, it was a welcome break to see a little more versatility in style from JLo in 2003, when her fashion choices seemed to reflect a more glamorous side. Accompanied by then-boyfriend and co-star to the California premiere of their film Gigli, Lopez was all smiles in a figure-flattering, low-cut fitted gown. While the movie — and the “Bennifer” romance — would go on to tank in a big way, this fashion moment hit all the right notes.

A welcome departure from the midriff-baring crop tops and go-go boots that Jennifer Lopez was known for during this time, all eyes were on her as she stepped onto the red carpet at the Golden Globes in 2004 wearing this pretty Grecian-inspired orange gown from designer Michael Kors.

In her longest marriage to date (we’ve got our fingers crossed for a “happily ever after with A-Rod), 2005 had Jennifer Lopez donning that “newlywed glow” on the arm of new hubby and fellow Latin music star Marc Anthony. Dressing more conservatively than we were used to seeing her, the satin gown she donned for the Monster In Law film premiere seemed out to overwhelm her frame and did nothing for her signature curves. It was a surprising style choice for the usually body-aware star, and fortunately, not a look she would repeat on future red carpets.

In true JLo fashion, the star used the MTV Awards red carpet to take some fun fashion risks when she stepped out in this sparkly long-sleeved mini dress, matching head scarf and thigh-high patent boots. While the look was far from her best, it was a refreshing break from the otherwise conservative and uncharacteristically demure looks she was stepping out in during this time.

In 2009, Jennifer Lopez may have been managing some musical disappointments and the still-fresh flop of her 2007 Latin miniseries Como Ama una Mujer, but the mega-star had much more to be smiling about with the 2008 birth of her twins. Safe to say her positive attitude was on track with all the big things to come in the following year alone — ahem — American Idol and her first film in three years, The Back-Up Plan. With all of this on the horizon, JLo seemed to glow from within as she stunned at the 2009 Golden Globes in this gorgeous gold Marchesa gown.

One of her lesser-known style moments, we’re still not over JLo’s stunning look for the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards. In a black-and-white midi dress with her hair down and a simple red lip, JLo looks effortlessly chic and timeless.

The then-45-year-old American Idol judge stepped out and commanded all eyes on her in this daring Charbel Zoe dress with cut-outs and slits in all the right places. This is the kind of risqué glam and drama we have come to expect from Jennifer Lopez and at the 2014 MTV Awards, she did not disappoint. Can we also talk about that signature smolder? Damn, girl.

2015 was a great year for style moments from Jennifer Lopez. While it’s almost impossible to choose just a few of our favourites, this glamorous sparkly Zuhair Murad number from the 2015 Golden Globe Awards definitely makes the list.

Flash-forward to 2019! These are the best and worst dressed celebrities from this year’s Golden Globe Awards’ red carpet.

Sporting 200 carats of Harry Winston diamonds and a canary-yellow Giambattista Valli gown with a red lip to the 2016 Golden Glob Awards, Jennifer Lopez wasn’t taking any chances at sharing the spotlight. She stunned in the gown, which was uncharacteristically covered-up by her usual standards, injecting some of her signatures sass with a slit detail and her bold glam for the evening.

Wearing a Georges Chakra couture gown, Jennifer Lopez glided onto the red carpet and absolutely stunned in the shocking pink hue, complete with (surprise, surprise) a daring neckline and shoulder-baring halter cut. This kind of fun-fashion styling is what we live for with Lopez, who’s style has matured to where she knows what works for her, and what kind of style risks will pay off on the best-dressed lists.

Shocking hues were a thing in 2018 and will continue going strong in 2019, but we can’t say the same for these trends (they need to go).

An icon and true style star, this is our favourite JLo fashion moment of 2019 (so far). The confident — and recently-engaged — JLo worked every angle of this stunning and futuristic-feeling Zuhair Murad gown, which even had fiancé Alex Rodriguez in awe from the sidelines as JLo worked it for photographers. While the high slit and fitted bodice are something we’ve come to expect from JLo, the high-fashion details are the kinds of unexpected surprises that we look forward to seeing on the unstoppable muli-talented mega star. We can’t wait to see what else she brings to the red carpet in 2019.
