Ever since we saw photos of the new Gossip Girl cast gathered on the steps of the New York City MET, we’ve had high hopes for the next generation’s interpretation of the guilty pleasure series. Only time can tell whether this series compares to the original, but one thing’s for sure, the fashion hits the mark. The crew may be new, but their style is reminiscent of their Constance Billard predecessors, while injecting an extra dose of cool.
The OG characters earned style icon status with their girly headbands, boho dresses and embellished blazers — but we won’t be seeing those this time around. Instead, the new cast mixes their already-stylish school uniforms with more casual touches like hoodies and designer sneakers, all while holding on to their own individuality.
Though the reboot of the early ‘2000s classic was highly anticipated, it came out of the gate with mixed reviews. But no matter what you think of the show, when it comes to the style, you know you love it. XOXO.
The slip dress
Slip dresses are the Gossip Girl dress of choice for nights out at moody lounges and make out sessions in dark corners. But for us, after a year and some of wearing sweatpants and going braless, the slip dress offers a comfortable transition back into ‘real clothes’ while looking effortlessly chic. It’s also incredibly versatile — you can dress it up with heels, or dress it down with a pair of sneakers. Take a style tip from sisters Julien Calloway and Zoya Lott by playing with textures and fabrics, mixing it up with satin, metallics or sequins to suit your mood.

The letterman jacket
Sure, the cast could be wearing these all the time to show off their school pride. Our bet is that these badass letterman coats are a staple in their wardrobe because they’re accidentally cool. This casual option in their school uniform is effortlessly chill, often worn with trendy Balenciaga sneakers and designer bags. For a more lowkey look, try going full Princess Diana and style one with a slimming black turtleneck and relaxed mom jeans.

The chunky knit sweater
Every capsule wardrobe needs at least one of these. The perfect outer layer for any chilly situation, the chunky sweater allows you to pile as much or as little as you want underneath it. Whether it’s a button-down cardigan or cozy knit turtleneck, the Gossip Girl cast wears these in abundance. Take notes from characters Audrey Hope or Luna La who usually wear theirs with a playful bow tie around the neck.

The white button down
The crisp, white button down shirt has proven to be the breakout trend of 2021. This versatile shirt just happens to be a key part of the Constance Billard school uniform, tying together style and professionalism. Get the look by wearing it buttoned up under a crewneck sweater or leave it unbuttoned over a bra or crop top.

The oversized hoodie
You could shed a tear thinking about parting with your favourite hoodie with back-to-school and work around the corner. Gossip Girl’s obsession with hoodies proves that you don’t have to, and that they can be styled in a way that’s anything but sloppy. Wear yours under a bomber jacket like GG character Aki Menzie, or like Zoya Lott who can be seen wearing hers so oversized that it fits like a dress.

The sweater vest
The sweater vest emerged as a fall trend in 2020 and it’s still going strong. No light academia aesthetic is complete without the quintessential knit vest that serves both ‘grandpa’ and ‘Ivy league’ at the same time. Nerd out by wearing this with a white button-down shirt and a pair of trousers to nail the look.

The shacket
If your current casual style doesn’t allow for an oversized blazer just yet, the shacket might be for you. This cozy almost-jacket is warm enough to hold you over until the winter months and it’s an excellent layering piece. Style yours like Zoya Lott by wearing yours with a cute mini skirt and Jordans.
