Halloween is right around the corner, and while some people have had their costumes planned out for weeks (if not months) in advance, there’s still a slew of us who are scrambling at the last minute and scouring the internet for inspiration.
According to data from Google Adwords, common (read: kid-centric) searches include witch, dinosaur, princess and fairy; however, there’s always a last-minute runaway hit that emerges from pop culture. Last year, it was Among Us. In 2021, it’s all about — surprise, surprise! — the Korean breakout Netflix series Squid Game.
According to Google Trends, Squid Game is the most searched Halloween costume in the last 30 days. Not only is it No. 1 in Canada, but also across the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Although it wins by a landslide if you’re looking at Canada on a national level, the runaway hit hasn’t quite won over every province.
Harley Quinn (from Suicide Squad) remains the No. 1 search in Newfoundland & Labrador for three years running, while a classic witch costume is the most popular in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Meanwhile, Cruella (modeled after Emma Stone’s latest incarnation, no doubt) is the top spooky season Google search in Saskatchewan. The rest of the country’s provinces and territories? It’s all about Squid Game.
