The Year of the Ox: What it Means for Your Chinese Zodiac

Amy Schupruk

Goodbye rat, hello ox! Lunar New Year is just around the corner — Feb. 12th to be exact. This annual festival is celebrated in several Asian countries and lasts around 15 days based on a lunar calendar, so the first day changes from year to year. The first day of the festival is determined by the presence of the first new moon in the lunar calendar year. On the flip side, the first full moon of the lunar calendar marks the final day of the festival. Read: The entire event is based on the moon.

A big part of the tradition is the transition of the Chinese zodiac that will represent that particular year. The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle of animal signs with your sign determined based on your year of birth within the lunar calendar. The zodiacs are meant to reveal your personality, fortune in love and career, and general outlook for the year ahead. This year we celebrate the Year of the Ox. So, what does that mean for your particular zodiac? Will you find love or expand your family? Or, will career opportunities come knocking at your door?

With a little help from thechinesezodiac.org, we’ve put together a list of what to expect this year.

Rat: Hardworking and adaptable

Amy Schupruk

You’re a rat if you were born in: 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

Those born under the rat sign are known to accept changes easily and typically have a sunny outlook on life. While 2020 may have been a tough year on optimism, rats can expect a surge of positive energy and luck throughout the year.

Rats are known to be ambitious and will perform well in the workplace this year. In fact, your career will be a priority for you. Avoid being impulsive in financial decisions and really think through bigger purchases (translation: don’t buy the first home you see!). Keep your spending low and savings high this year.

When it comes to personal connections, love is on the way for single rats, but practice some patience. As Diana Ross and the Supremes once sang, you can’t hurry love. That patience will pay off with a potential long-term partner who will bring a whole new level of passion into your life. For those already in a relationship, you can expect a peaceful union between you and your partner — even during lockdown.

Physical activity is key when it comes to health this year. While there may be moments of extreme stress, as long as you are staying active — you should be in good shape, both mentally and physically.

Ox: Diligent and tough

Amy Schupruk

You’re an ox if you were born in: 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

The star of the show this year. If you’re an ox, you’re a natural born leader and extremely loyal to your friends and family. 2021 will be a lucky year for you in all aspects, so long as you heed caution in certain areas.

Oxen are self-starters and hardworking, so when it comes to finance and career you can expect to have a successful year. One thing about this zodiac sign is that they are known to be stubborn and that can get in the way of success or reaching full potential. With an open mind, your professional network will expand — opening the door to more opportunities and even new friendships.

For the single oxen out there, 2021 is the perfect year for you to focus on relationships. When it comes to love, don’t let old flames keep you from finding a new romantic prospect. While you may be tempted to rekindle an old romance, it will prevent you from building a new relationship that may actually be lasting. If you’re already involved in a committed relationship, this is the year to focus on deepening that connection, which may take it to the next level — whether it’s marriage, children or moving in together.

Yes, luck is on your side this year, but you need to focus on practicing self-care throughout the year. Do constant check-ins with yourself to gauge how you’re doing and don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family or even professionals when you feel your emotions building up.

Tiger: Bold and active

Amy Schupruk

You’re a tiger if you were born in: 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

While tigers are known to be overconfident, this is not the year to be impulsive with your decisions. Although it’s in your nature to make big, bold moves, 2021 is the year to practice restraint. Only then will you find yourself experiencing growth and development.

Budgeting will be key for you, to avoid any difficult financial situations in 2021. As lockdowns are lifted, you’ll be tempted to make travel plans. Review your expenses and decide if now is truly the time to be making big purchases, like plane tickets. Instead, shift your focus onto long-term plans this year. When it comes to your career, same deal. Don’t be impulsive and really think through what your next step is before jumping into a new job.

If you’re a single tiger, be open to exploring new partners. This won’t be your year when it comes to a long-term, romantic relationship, but that’s okay. Dating around is, in fact, encouraged. It will give you a better perspective on what you really want from a future long-term partner. Already in a relationship? You’ll find yourself having a challenging year with your partner. It won’t be easy navigating through it, but if you can weather through this storm — you can get through anything.

Patience is important for your health and well-being this year. While you’re an active zodiac, you need to give yourself opportunities of relaxation. Physical activity will really help maintain your health, but also aid in recovery from draining and stressful periods that this year may present.

Amy Schupruk

You’re a rabbit if you were born in: 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011

The self-discipline that rabbits naturally have will lend itself well this year. Creativity and passion will be the driving force behind this zodiac sign in 2021. You’ll find yourself breaking out of your reserved shell in 2021 to really pursue what sparks joy in your life.

In 2021, you’ll feel more ambitious, but not necessarily towards your current job. Instead, you’ll find yourself shifting focus onto projects that serve you and your passions. While this new journey may be scary at first, things will eventually balance out throughout the year. Rabbits have a tendency to allow their stubbornness to hinder success. So keep an open mind and be gentle with yourself as you explore this new path you’re on. When it comes to finances, these new projects and opportunities means your bank account won’t be brimming with cash. That being said, if you plan and budget ahead of time, you’ll be in good shape by the end of the year.

If you’re in a relationship, you may face challenges for the first part of the year with your partner. However, that doesn’t mean to walk away from difficult conversations or situations. Instead, take the time to work through things with your partner and you’ll both come out stronger and happier than ever. If you’re still looking for that special someone, a pivotal moment will happen this year that will lead to a potential long-term romance. Love comes when you least expect it, but it’s always good to keep your eyes and heart open.

Rabbits need to be mindful of their health this year — physically, but especially mentally. This may be the year to really hit that “reset” button in your life. Not only will it open the door to more creative avenues, but will lead to a healthier mindset.

Dragon: Adventurous and ambitious

Amy Schupruk

You’re a dragon if you were born in: 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012

While 2021 is a lucky year for dragons, it will come with a lot of unexpected changes. However, change can be good. Your adventurous side will allow you to openly accept these changes, while your practical side will help you navigate them with ease.

Thanks to your analytical skills, your career will flourish — with new opportunities presenting themselves throughout the year. You may even find yourself making a major career change. With careful and logical assessment, you’ll make this decision with confidence. One thing that dragons need to work on this year is their finances. Dragons can have an impulsive side, especially when it comes to spending. However, 2021 is the year to really re-evaluate your finances and to keep yourself accountable by establishing a budget.

While you may be confident in your career choices, you’ll struggle a bit in the love department. If you’re not in a relationship, take some time to practice self-love and re-evaluate what you want for yourself before pursuing a romantic partner. You may even find that this is not the year to explore a long-term relationship, since it may take a backseat to a new job. For those in a long-term relationship, you may find yourself putting your partner second to your job. However, all that hard work is meant to create a future for the both of you. As long as you remain communicative with your partner, they will respect your work grind and even cheer you on.

With a busy year ahead for dragons, make sure to take time for yourself. Carve out time during the work week to focus on relaxation. Make sure to take those vacation days to really disconnect from work life. It’ll be key to reaching your full potential this year.

Snake: Passionate and idealistic

A graphic of a snake for Lunar New Year 2021
Amy Schupruk

You’re a snake if you were born in: 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013

Resolution and family are at the centre of 2021 for snakes. Snakes are known to be good at communicating, while saying very little. In many ways that will help you this year as you work to resolve older conflicts with family members and friends. It’ll also help to strengthen the relationships you have with those you’re closest to.

When it comes to finances, you’ll be more generous with your money this year, while still being responsible with how you spend it. Career-wise, this is not the year to make the leap into a new job or career path. You can certainly plan for it in the future, but 2021 is not a favourable year to make that move. Instead, if you really dedicate time into your current work, all that hard work will pay off.

Love is in the air for snakes, but keep yourself in check. Snakes are known to be passionate and over analytical, which can lead to jealousy. This is where communication is important. Make an effort to have open dialogues with your potential partner about how you’re feeling, instead of bottling it up. Similar to single snakes, those in relationships will benefit from communication. You and your partner will strengthen your love through open discussions — gaining further trust in each other. Beyond romantic prospects, the relationship with your family will be at the core of everything you do in 2021. They will offer you great advice and will be a great source of comfort when you need to talk to someone.

You may be full of energy as a snake at the start of this year, but keep your mental health in mind as you take on more work and projects. Snakes are prone to overworking, so consider taking on activities like meditation to help your mind disconnect and recharge. Being outdoors will also help to maintain a healthy mind throughout the year (read: lots of Vitamin D!).

Amy Schupruk

You’re a horse if you were born in: 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

Despite a few years of uncertainty and instability, those born under the horse sign have been able to take this in stride — thanks to their easy going personality. That being said, the tide is turning in their favour and 2021 will be a great year for both inner and financial growth.

Success in your career is within reach this year, so long as you put in the hard work. As the money starts to flow in, be smart with your spending. Consider investment options to help you budget and save money to avoid the temptation to spend. If you’re in an office job, you may want to look for new opportunities that allow you to step away from the desk and interact with people, since horses are known to be more sociable.

This may not be the year for love for horses. If you’re single, you may find yourself so consumed by work that you miss out on romantic prospects. Proceed with caution when it comes to new relationships this year. Horses tend to lead with their heart and not their head, which leads to heartbreak. Really evaluate if this is the right time in your life to be in a serious relationship, before you move forward. If your Facebook status is “in a relationship,” you can expect some big shifts in your relationship. This could come in the form of marriage or expanding your family — whether it’s a new pet or baby. Or, it could be something as big as ending a relationship and moving onto another.

As long as you stay active throughout the year, you shouldn’t experience many health issues. Some minor bumps, such as a cold or dental repairs, may come along, but will be easily resolved.

When it comes to finances, you may not be the most organized, so it may lead to some difficulties throughout the year. Consider tapping into a financial advisor to help you plan out your future, so you can earn big, but save big too. In general, expect to make some moves in your career — whether it’s getting a promotion, working abroad, or getting a new gig.

If you’re in a relationship, you may find the “spark” missing with your partner, which will have you questioning the future. Take some time to evaluate what you’re looking for — it may lead to a breakup, or it may do the opposite and breathe new life into your relationship. For single goats, 2021 is a great year for love, but you’ll find yourself being more selective of potential partners. You’re not ready to mingle. You’re ready for commitment.

Those under the goat sign tend to be more peaceful and that will carry through to this year. However, take care of your heart when it comes to love. Those seeking love this year may experience heartbreak, which will lead to stress. Tend to yourself and don’t be afraid to tap into your social circle for support.

If you’re already taken, you’ll experience a similar level of passion, however, be weary of temptations from those outside of your relationship. If you can channel those feelings back into your relationship, that will strengthen the bond you have with your partner.

Amy Schupruk

You’re a rooster if you were born in: 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

When it comes to those already in a relationship, make an effort to show your partner how supportive you are and how much you appreciate them. Your partner will be seeking your attention — it’ll be up to you to provide it.

You’ll need to work on managing your stress this year. With all the shifts and changes in your life, it’s inevitable that you’ll feel the pressure to get your life in order. Take a breath. Things won’t be perfect, but that’s okay. You may not have power over a situation, but you do have power over how you handle it. 2021 is going to be a busy one for dogs. It’ll be a monumental year with special opportunities presenting themselves, including a shift in your future plans that will affect both your career and personal life.

Dogs do have a tendency to overspend and make impulsive purchases, but this is not the year to make unnecessary purchases. There’s risk of financial difficulties throughout the year, but if you plan and budget accordingly, then you’ll be in good shape. When it comes to your career, there will be many opportunities for growth and even a promotion. A graphic of a pig for Lunar New Year 2021
Amy Schupruk

You’re a pig if you were born in: 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Friendship and love. It’s shaping up to be a good year for pigs when it comes to relationships. There will be other areas that may give you some trouble this year, but your ability to stay calm will help you push through these situations.

When it comes to your career, you may actually find yourself satisfied with your current job, which will motivate you to work hard on the tasks assigned. That hard work won’t go unnoticed, as it may even lead to a promotion or a new role opportunity. In general, it will be a year for professional growth if you’re a pig. These shifts in your career mean more growth in your bank account as well. While you’ll naturally be good at managing your finances, consider putting more money aside for the future as it will become very useful at a later time.

Pigs are known to be sensitive, which leads to a more romantic side. While love is definitely in the cards for single pigs, you may not necessarily be seeking it. However, if love comes knocking at the door, make sure to answer. You may find that whoever is on the other side will provide you with a meaningful relationship — even if you weren’t expecting it. Those in relationships will find their connection deepen — creating a stronger bond than ever before. It’ll be a peaceful union this year with little disruptions — allowing you to enjoy each other’s company. When it comes to friendships, put in the effort with those you want a long-lasting connection with. The other side will appreciate the effort and in turn, reciprocate. One thing pigs need to be cautious of this year is overindulgence. Be mindful of balance in everything you do, including work and food. Working too much, for example, will lead to high levels of stress and anxiety. By creating a balance, it will lead to an overall healthier lifestyle for you.
