What is “skin flooding”?

According to Entertainment Tonight, skin flooding is a relatively simple hack that helps provide a deeper level of hydration to the skin by ensuring your face is damp before applying your go-to skincare products.

As Azza Halim, board-certified multi-specialist physician, tells Pop Sugar, “The goal is to achieve better absorption of products, which in turn will boost skin’s elasticity.”

How do you achieve skin flooding?

If your skin needs a hydration boost (especially during this winter season), skin flooding could get you there. The first step of the routine is cleansing as usual, followed by a hydrating facial mist.

According to Pop Sugar, it’s essential to make sure you “flood” your skin in a precise order. The first step is to cleanse your skin with a hydrating face wash or a cleanser that’s great for removing dirt, oil and makeup without leaving your skin stripped and dry.

Immediately after washing your face, spray your face using a hydrating facial mist or splash and dampen your skin with some water if you don’t have one handy. The key here is to keep your skin damp and hydrated in between products and steps.

Next, apply a hyaluronic acid serum while your skin is still damp. Moisturizing products (like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and AHAs) lock in more moisture and leave your skin feeling plumper and hydrated when they’re applied to damp skin as opposed to dry skin.
