Having already acted in small roles on shows like Baywatch and 7th Heaven, Mila Kunis scored big when she landed a part in the 1998 acclaimed HBO biopic Gia, where she played the younger version of Angelina Jolie’s lead character.

1998 was set to be a big year for Kunis, who, after lying to producers about her age (though just 14, she claimed to be nearly 18), landed what would be her breakout role as Jackie Burkheart on That 70’s Show. With a sweet, younger style and a babyface to match, it wouldn’t be long before Kunis would break out of her (fashion) shell.

In 1999, Mila Kunis was starring in a hit television show and had just been chosen to replace Lacey Chabert as the brooding Meg Griffin on the animated sitcom, Family Guy. Things were definitely on track for rising star Kunis, who was still finding her groove on red carpets, teetering between a look that was age-appropriate, and the bit of edge her quirky personality seemed to call for.

Rebelling against the baby-faced child star of past red carpets, Mila Kunis showed up to the Billboard Music Awards in 2000 wearing clunky boots, a patch-work overcoat, grunge-style tee and sporting red streaks in her hair. Looking decidedly more “grown up” in a blazer and footwear other than black, platform boots, Mila Kunis wowed in a simply-chic look at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004.

This would also be the year that Kunis would famously reunite with her former on (and rumored-off) screen love interest, Ashton Kutcher. The pair would get engaged in 2014 and — well, you know the rest, at least to present — are living happily ever after.

While we can’t say for sure if it was her ongoing career success, her rekindled romance, or those metallic hot pants that had Kunis glowing at CinemaCon in 2012, the look was working for her.
