Weddings can be stressful for families at the best of times, but it looks like Teresa Giudice and Luis Ruela’s wedding this past weekend was too much for Giudice’s brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Melissa Gorga. While The Real Housewives of New Jersey star and her businessman partner wed in an extravagant celebration on Saturday, the Gorgas apparently went to the beach instead.

Why didn’t Melissa and Joe Gorga attend Teresa Giudice and Luis Ruela’s wedding?

The last-minute wedding snub appears to have been the result of an argument that came up during filming of season 13 of RHONJ a few days before the wedding. According to sources who spoke with PEOPLE, the trouble arose due to false rumours about Joe and Melissa’s marriage arose during filming on Thursday.

“Teresa betrayed them in a way that’s unforgivable,” one source told PEOPLE. “They’re not going to celebrate Teresa’s new marriage when all she does is try to tear apart theirs.”

‘The real story’ is yet to be told — according to Joe and Melissa Gorga

On the August 11 episode of Melissa’s podcast, Melissa Gorga On Display, the Gorgas addressed the controversy that arose from their absence at Luis and Teresa’s wedding the previous weekend. Citing a “laundry list” of reasons why they decided to skip the nuptials, Melissa seemed to confirm that drama surrounding the filming of the RHONJ finale was at the heart of the matter.

“I will let all my listeners know this: obviously, there was something that went down at the finale of filming The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” Melissa said on the podcast. “Those exact details I obviously cannot say today. Anything that we have filmed is something that I am not able to talk about.”

Melissa went on to note that what has been reported so far is not “the full entire story,” and that “the real story and why we were not there is not 100 per cent out there yet.”

“Obviously, I am not going to sit here and say that there wasn’t drama, that it wasn’t crazy,” she said. “Yes, there was a little aggression from certain people that could have been a little scary. There definitely were moments.”

With this in mind, Melissa went on to explain that there was “plenty of reason” for her and Joe to then not attend the wedding, and that it would have been “very strange” for them to have been in attendance after what went down.

Joe, who was a guest on the podcast episode, added that it was “so, so hard” for him to not attend Giudice’s wedding, as Teresa is his only sister.

“To me, it was devastating. It really was. It was one of the hardest days of my life. It was bad,” Joe said. “But listen: let’s go back to the reunion. She did this, you know? This was all on her. This is what she really wanted. She didn’t want [Melissa] in the wedding, she didn’t want any of my children in the wedding, she barely wanted me.”

Still, the Gorgas added that they wished for Teresa to “be happy and have a good life” despite everything.

Of the wedding, Joe said that it looked amazing and that “It sucked that we weren’t there for many reasons.”

While — for whatever reasons — Joe and Melissa were not in attendance (though Page Six reports that the couple was still on the reception’s seating chart), the East Brunswick, NJ wedding was a who’s who of Housewives stars. In addition to Giudice’s four daughters (Gia, Gabriella, Milania and Audriana), Giudice’s RHONJ co-stars Dolores Catania and Jennifer Aydin were bridesmaids.
