TikTok has long been at the forefront of trends when it comes to all things fashion and beauty, but who would have thought that the next beauty trend would dive into something a little more theoretical? Enter: TikTok’s hair theory.

Since it first made its way onto the app, #hairtheory has garnered a whopping 48 million views and counting – and it seems like it’s only going to continue to spike in popularity. But what, exactly, is hair theory?

What is hair theory?

These trending hair theory videos depict users showing off their hair in a series of different styles, from buns to blowouts. The idea is to prove that how you wear your hair can not only change the way that you look, but also the way that you’re perceived. And they’re not wrong. You can see from the videos (which are definitely not in short supply) that the way you wear your hair can completely transform your entire style.

How can your hair be a form of self-expression?

According to TikTok, your hair may be both the ultimate fashion accessory and a canvas for self-expression. From sleek and polished to wild and untamed, our hair can portray the essence of our personality. It can reflect everything, from our mood to our confidence to the way that we view the world.

“Hairstyles can reflect your personality, style, and confidence, and all of these factors can influence how people view you,” The Glasshouse Salon and Spa founder, Caroline Brooks, tells Glamour. “For example, a more adventurous, colourful hairstyle may signify a bolder, experimental personality, while a sleeker, more classic cut may suggest a more sophisticated, professional person.”

Whether you opt for the practical claw clip or the elegant sleek bun, TikTok users insist that your choices can reveal a lot. While wearing your hair down and natural might suggest that you’re comfortable with yourself, a ponytail might give an added air of efficiency.

Plus, having your hair freshly styled may also change your confidence level compared to if you just rolled out of bed with a bad hair day.

“Getting a fresh blow-dry can make you feel more confident, and a new colour can make you feel refreshed, but a bad hair day can make you feel self conscious,” Brooks adds. “Hair styles can also be a way to express ourselves and talk about our own personality and style.”

So, next time you’re looking for a new way to express your personality through your style, it may be high-time to test out a new hairstyle. If you need some inspiration, check out our list of 13 hairstyles you’ll be seeing everywhere in 2023.
