Calling all bookworms and novel lovers: we’ve put together your next travel guide. Bustling cities often make for the perfect setting for a story, but which cities appear in literature the most often?

As Time Out reports, UK housebuilder David Wilson Homes has looked through the e-book database openlibrary.org to compile a list of the cities that are the most written about in fiction novels.

The list is pretty heavily dominated by English-speaking cities, as openlibrary.org primarily hosts English books, so it may not be the most accurate list in the world – but nevertheless, these cities often lie at the heart of some of the most popular novels to date.

What city is the most written about in literature?

It likely comes as no surprise that snagging the top spot on the list is New York City. The oft-romanticized city boasts a jaw-dropping 79,000 books written about it – nearly twice the number of books any other city has to its name. From The Great Gatsby to The Catcher in the Rye, some of the highest-praised classics in the literary world take place in the Big Apple.

The 10 cities with the most books written about them

According to David Wilson Homes’ study, New York City is followed by Washington DC, with nearly 44,000 books under its belt, and Rome, which has almost 35,000 books to its name.
