‘Hunger: A Memoir of (My Body),’ by Roxane Gay
Written by one of Lauren’s “favourite iconic feminist authors,” Roxane Gay’s New York Times best-selling memoir Hunger explores “trauma and coping with trauma in a very unique and honest way.” The book deals with topics around food, weight, the body and surviving trauma and sexual violence.

‘Breasts and Eggs’ by Mieko Kawakami
Another woman-authored book that Lauren recommends is Mieko Kawakami’s award-winning 2021 novel, Breasts and Eggs. This inventive, humorous and emotional novel tells the story of three generations of Japanese women in different chapters of their lives.

‘Sula’ by Toni Morrison
And, if you’re loving fiction featuring multiple generations of women, Sula by Toni Morrison is another recommendation from Lauren. “It’s a little bit dark, it’s a little bit twisted, it has themes of intense female friendship — it’s incredible,” Lauren says.

‘Neapolitan Novels’ by Elena Ferrante
Finally, for “a collection of stories about a female friendship that spans a lifetime,” Lauren suggests the Neapolitan series of novels by Elena Ferrante. While the four books’ covers are purposefully made to look like, as Lauren puts it, “bad gas station romance novels,” there’s much more to the story: this series tells an epic, must-read story about friendship in post-war Naples.
Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante, boxed set, Amazon, $73.
