The new year is right around the corner, so naturally we’re gearing up for 2022 by keeping tabs on the hottest style and fashion trends. From the mental notes we’ve taken to the influencer posts we’ve saved, it’s looking like the nostalgia of Y2K has once again inspired looks for the upcoming 12 months.
While we’re still ahead of the game, there’s no better time than the present to put these looks to the test. These are the 10 style trends we predict will be everywhere in 2022.
Diamanté embellishments on your clothing and accessories
Diamonds really are a girl’s best friend, and this year brands like Mach & Mach, a recently blogger-approved shoe brand, and Alexander Wang brought this statement to life with the embellishments of diamanté on bags and shoes. While this trend originated specifically with jewellery, we’ll be seeing more subtle sparkling details on accessories and clothing in the coming months.
Gemmed Baguette Handbag, Dynamite, $70.

Dark Academia isn’t the only way to channel a prep student
Shopping the back-to-school look won’t just be for September; heck, it won’t even be just for students! In 2022, we’re channelling our inner prep school student with cable knits, varsity jackets, pleated skirts, oxfords and striped polos. While Miu Miu solidified the preppy comeback, we can’t help but think of the It Girl fashion of the Gossip Girl reboot. Shoutout to the students of Constance Billard-St. Jude’s School.
Olivia 15” Mini Skirt, Aritzia, $88.
When it comes to pants, go big or go home
Whether you call them wide-legged or slouchy, next season’s trousers will be amped up with volume and styled with other oversized layers and tops for a free-flowing look. We love to see it!
Porter Pleated Straight Pants, Garage, $50.
Fashion wants more fringe in 2022
Fringe no longer solely offsets western aesthetics. For the upcoming spring season, fringe will make a play for texture and movement.
Asymmetrical Fringe Dress, Mango, $100.
One of fashion’s biggest trends: it’s all about the cutouts
Asymmetrical cutouts and simple keyholes certainly had their moment this year, but from the look of our Instagram feeds, 2022 will welcome even more cutouts with pants, dresses, skirts and intricate layers.
Benny Cut Out Pants, Revolve, $114.

It’s all about those bare midriffs
Could it be a branch of Y2K-inspired fashion, or is it the result of the resurgence of workout videos? Whatever the case is, designers and retailers alike are committed to cropped tops — be it bra tops, cropped blouses, shrunken knits and shrugs or even cardigans. Why cover up when you can just show off your midriff? For inspo, we suggest taking note of Sandy Liang’s Spring 2022 Ready To Wear and opt for a cropped cardigan and low-rise miniskirt.
Buttoned Ultra-Crop Cardigan, Simons, $39.

Channel Kim Kardashian with versatile catsuits
Ah, the catsuit: offering a full range of motion, this one-piece statement outfit brings ease to getting dressed and a new approach to getting glammed up — see Kim Kardashian for reference. Since they can easily be worn for athleisure or dressed up with a blazer, expect to find catsuits in full-out lace, prints, shiny textures and details like ruching, along with solid-toned full-length jumpsuits.

Invest in an everyday blazer to rock for any occasion
Note to self: invest in a blazer. We don’t just mean a set of oversized pants and a blazer. Labels like Michael Kors and Fendi are giving the menswear-inspired trend of the pantsuit a significant makeover with some sexy, ultra-feminine details and additions. Think: a matching bra, or perhaps accessories to dress up the ensemble. What we love most about this timeless trend is that it has dramatically evolved, so you can rock it for almost any occasion.
Double Breasted Wool Blend Blazer, Zara, $179.
Drape yourself in stylish, flowing outfits, from shirts to dresses
From billowing outfits to Grecian-inspired ruching, draping fabrics will take full effect in the upcoming months. For this romantic trend, designers like Rick Owens and LOEWE featured draped dresses with a directional take on classic cuts and bodycon silhouettes for an edgier feel.
The Long Sleeve Camp Collar Blouse in Dark Coffee, Frank And Oak, $70.
Show off those legs with versatile micro skirts
Great lengths often means a lot of leg which also calls for super short skirts. Think: Paris Hilton in the early 2000s. While designers are choosing to remix this trend with pleats and low-rise cuts (scary, we know), mini skirts of all the ranges are sure to hit the racks to inspire versatile looks from street style to evening wear.
Margot Skirt, Reformation, $128.
