10 Reasons Kathy Hilton Should Be a Permanent ‘RHOBH’ Cast Member

1:56

Ever since Kathy Hilton burst onto the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills scene in her hot pink finest, she’s breathed new life into the series. Sure, we’ve caught glimpses of the latest “friend” in the past (she is Kim and Kyle Richards’ sister, after all), but this year she’s had more screen time than ever. Yet, it still isn’t enough.

From Kathy’s quirky personality to her penchant for bringing up the most random stories (at the most random of times), the 62-year-old has been one of Season 11’s most entertaining personalities. Although she’s admitted she has no interest in upgrading her status anytime soon, here’s why we think this lady needs to be promoted to a bona fide diamond-holder — stat.

All those epic pranks

If you’re not having a fun time, Kathy Hilton is here to turn that around. The personality proved as much during a group dinner this season, when she and Dorit Kemsley pretended to shoot back straight martinis (they were actually just chugging water). At first the others thought they were going to be in for a very drunken night, but eventually everyone realized it was just one of those pranks Kathy had promised to bust out at some point. As for us? We’re still laughing at the random genius of it.

The sisterly connection

Part of the reason RHOBH had so much heart in the earlier seasons was because of Kim and Kyle’s relationship. Although they had their ups and downs, you always wanted to root for them to pull through. Fast forward to today, and seeing Kathy and Kyle together has brought back some of that nostalgia. Sure, they seem to have a healthier relationship than Kim and Kyle, and yes, Kathy and Kyle have fought a lot in the past. But watching Kath talk about her baby sister “Doogie” and share stories of them growing up together has definitely been a nice change this year.

She’s authentic

Kathy is going to be Kathy, and no one can tell her otherwise. Whether she’s bringing the group 50 tacos on a girls weekend or taking a pass on some random activity so that she can hang solo and get some sleep, the woman is a total vibe. She also knows that she’s incredibly privileged, and although she prefers to boss Kyle around in the kitchen or tell Sutton Stracke whether her jewels are too much, she’ll also get down and dirty to help clean up broken glass… even if it is with a barbecue brush and not a broom.

She lives by her own rules

Pay close attention the next time this group decides to play some random game during a dinner party: odds are Kathy plays the game her way. Remember the Two Truths and a Lie? Instead of playing along Kathy just told three truths — truths she had just told the other women about herself before the game started. And when the others clarified the rules for her again? Kathy just smiled and continued to do her own thing.

Look, it’s swell to see the other women change their outfits six times a day and drape themselves in designer threads to outdo one another, but is it a regulation to do so when you’re on this show? Nope, says Kathy. She has no problem doing her. From graphic tees to sweatpants during a girls weekend, Kathy will never succumb to the peer pressure of couture.

Her gems come at the perfect time

Kathy seems to be pretty great at diffusing a situation, don’t you think? Whether she does it intentionally or not, however, remains to be seen. Earlier this season when Sutton and Crystal Minkoff were going at it, Sutton revealed she couldn’t pretend everything was hunky dory. Without missing a beat Kathy looked at her and said, “Who is Hunky Dory?” Later in the confessional, she repeated the question. Did she really not know, or was she trying to make Sutton feel better during the never-ending drama? You be the judge.

She knows when to speak up

Perhaps it’s her “friend” status, or maybe it’s having raised kids, but Kathy seems to know when to pipe up and when to keep quiet. So many times during this season when others have fought or things turned ugly, Kathy stayed in the background, quietly observing. That doesn’t mean she isn’t intuitive, though. If you’ll recall she is the one who convinced Garcelle Beauvais not to leave after Garcelle accidentally pushed Erika Jayne too far about the whole Tom situation. Given this group’s tendency to put their noses in everyone else’s business, Kathy’s tactics are kind of refreshing.

We love learning more about her famous family

We would be lying if we said we didn’t like hearing more about Paris and Nicky Hilton from the woman who raised them, but it’s also true that we don’t delve too much into it all given Kathy’s status. If she were promoted to a diamond-holder, however, there would be way more opportunities to look at those relationships and learn even more about how Paris is shy or how Nicky hates her mother’s fashion sense, for example.

The other women also adore her

How many times have we heard, “Oh Kathy” so far this season? It’s true that the others really seem to adore her. How else would you describe Dorit carrying Kathy’s bags for her, or the others laughing off her random request for chia seeds for her smoothie? The other women truly respect Kathy, whether she’s sparking an honest conversation about race, or accidentally drinking Red Bulls and crawling into Kyle’s bed with snacks and newspapers in the middle of the night.

She doesn’t actually need the show

Let’s face it: Kathy is rich. Like, way richer than any of the other Housewives on this show, who sometimes like to pretend they’re even richer than they are. She also seems to have no interest in being on TV, also unlike some of the other ladies. To Kathy doing the show is just a good time, and maybe a way to spend more time with Kyle. To us, that’s completely refreshing. Because as much as we’ve loved watching all of the drama on this series unfold over the years, sometimes the fighting gets old or borders on Mean Girls territory (we see you, Denise Richards).

The fact that Kathy is just there to do her makes us love her even more, and embrace her quirkiness in full. Now if only someone could convince her to do this thing full-time in Season 12. Kyle, we’re looking at you.
