The Met Gala is always one of the most highly-anticipated red carpets of the year, with designers and celebrities breaking out some of the most elaborate, extravagant looks that fashion has to offer.

While it might feel a little eager, it’s never too early to start gearing up for the innovative event (out of which Kim Kardashian’s iconic, meme-worthy head-to-toe outfit was born) – especially since the theme, date, hosts and more have officially been announced for the Met Gala 2023.

As Teen Vogue notes, “The Met Gala is a charity benefit held by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to fundraise for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.”

You definitely won’t want to miss out on anything this event has to offer, so while you’re on the edge of your seat waiting for May, here’s everything we know about the Met Gala 2023 so far.

When is the 2023 Met Gala?

Fashion-lovers far and wide look forward to the annual event on the first Monday in May (except for in 2021, when it was rescheduled as a result of COVID-19). This year will be no different, Vogue reports, as the 2023 Met Gala will take place on May 1, 2023, with the accompanying display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art running from May 5 to July 16.

Who will host the 2023 Met Gala?

Fashion enthusiasts can look forward to an epic night, as your social media feeds are sure to be filled with iconic looks (and hilarious memes). But who will be hosting the evening?

The star-studded 2023 Met Gala will have four co-chairs: actors Penelope Cruz and Michaela Coel, singer Dua Lipa and tennis player Roger Federer.

What is the theme for the 2023 Met Gala?

Next comes the most coveted detail of all: the 2023 Met Gala Theme. The Met Gala has been known to honour designers in the past, from 2011’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty to 2017’s Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. Titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, this year will follow in those nights’ footsteps, as it honours the controversial late designer Karl Lagerfeld, known for his work at Chloé, Chanel and his own self-titled brand.

Lagerfeld was one of the most influential figures in the fashion scene, however, some stars are speaking out against the decision, citing the late designer’s controversial past.

As PEOPLE reports, Jameela Jamil released a lengthy statement on Instagram after Vogue announced the 2023 Met Gala theme.

“This man… was indeed, supremely talented, but used his platform in such a distinctly hateful way, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life, showing no remorse, offering now atonement, no apology, no help to groups he attacked… there was no explanation for his cruel outbursts,” Jamil wrote.

What will the Met Gala exhibit showcase?

The accompanying exhibit to the Met Gala, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will reportedly showcase “approximately 150 of Lagerfeld’s greatest outfits across his prolific six-decade career,” according to PEOPLE.

The exhibit will also feature some of Lagerfeld’s sketches, highlighting the evolution of a piece from a two-dimensional sketch into a three-dimensional work-of-art.

The Kardashians may not receive an invite to the Met Gala

Sources recently revealed to Page Six that Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour would be cracking down on guest list this year, and it looks like the Kardashians might not make the cut.

While Vogue wouldn’t comment on the guest list directly, the outlet speculated that the famous family wouldn’t be in attendance. However, a source close to the Kardashian-Jenners claim that the rumours that they aren’t invited to the biggest fashion event of the year aren’t true.
