After what feels like forever (four long years!) Lorde has risen and she’s armed with the perfect beachy, sun-kissed anthem. Hot girl summer can officially commence!
The Grammy-winner released “Solar Power” on Thursday, to coincide with the solar eclipse (she is a Scorpio after all!) Dressed in a chic yellow crop top and skirt to give us all outfit envy, Lorde heads to the beach to chill in the accompanying music video. No sooner had the track hit streaming platforms, she announced in a newsletter to her fans that it was the first single from her upcoming third album of the same name.
“There’s someone I want you to meet. Her feet are bare at all times. She’s sexy, playful, feral and free,” Lorde explained. “She’s a modern girl in a headstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many.”

“The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” she wrote. The mellow, warm sounding acoustic song is a departure from the sleek pop she experimented with on her last record Melodrama, but it makes sense that she’s shifting for a more low-key vibe to keep listeners on their toes. She teamed up with Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo who sing some stunning harmonies, giving the track a relaxing, ethereal sound.
Fans reacted quickly to the song on Twitter, with many saying Lorde had kicked off summer in the best way possible:

the fact lorde dropped a song called solar power THE SAME DAY there was a solar eclipse is fairly hi level operating. i can barely arrange a zoom across 2 different time zones.

There’s still no word on when the album will be out, but knowing Lorde, she will likely release it when we least expect it. Until then, we will all be blasting “Solar Power” and soaking up some sun (while wearing SPF, of course.)
