Refills used to be for diner coffee and soda fountains, but they’ve also been making their way into the beauty world since many products are yet another part of the plastics problem. That problem only got worse during the pandemic when the demand for single-use items suddenly increased. So, instead of using and tossing, consider these refillable options available in Canada.
Elate Cosmetics
Several items from this Canadian brand are refillable, including loose powder, bronzer, eyeshadow and eye makeup remover balm. Even better, the company uses mostly bamboo for their packaging, which is fully compostable. Additionally, the brands site lists all the components, and how to dispose of them.

Tata Harper Water Lock Moisturizer
The Vermont-based founder’s newest moisturizer/primer hybrid (which features orange peptides, pomegranate and hyaluronic acid) has refill pods available for when you’re ready for a top-up.

Kiehl’s Pouch Refillables
Offered in a selection of the brand’s favourite hair and body products such as Creme de Corps, Amino Acid Shampoo and Conditioner and Grapefruit Body Cleanser, these pouches can be returned to the store once emptied. The company will then recycle them for you. You can also purchase an aluminum, waterproof bottle at the same time to fill with your item of choice.

Detox Mode Impossible Soap
The Detox Market’s own brand of hand/body wash is available in refill packaging. It is a lovely-smelling blend of sweet almond, bergamot and cedarwood that cleanses but never dries the skin and there are two sizes of refills to choose from: 32 and 128 ounces.

The French brand offers plenty of refill options, but among them our favourite is this gorgeous body wash, which subtly foams and leaves the skin super soft and lightly-scented.

Made without aluminum, this coconut, sandalwood and vanilla-scented deodorant neutralizes odour without white streaks and the refill means water, fossil fuel use and green gas emissions are reduced by an estimated 47 per cent.
