Demi Lovato is proudly choosing to live their truth and own their gender identity. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer has announced that they are identifying as gender non-binary, and will be using they/them pronouns.
On Tuesday, Lovato opened up in a heartfelt Instagram post about coming to terms with who they are. In the caption, they explained the challenges of growing up in the public eye and struggling to live not only for themselves, but for everyone on the other side of the cameras.
“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” they wrote. “This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.”

Lovato also explained that they made the choice to share their decision not only to be transparent and vulnerable, but to support others who are struggling. “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones,” they added.
Many fans on Twitter praised the star and noted how their courage inspired them.

Earlier this year, Lovato opened up about the impact their failed engagement to Max Ehrich had on their identity. “When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am,” they told Glamour. “This past year, I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign.’ I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”
Lovato’s non-binary announcement came as part of the first episode of the “Neon Lights” singer’s podcast series, 4D with Demi Lovato, which launches today. On the debut episode, Lovato was joined by gender non-conforming author, performer and public speaker Alok Vaid-Menon to discuss identity.
Lovato’s weekly podcast will air on Wednesdays, and feature a slew of celebrity guests including Jameela Jamil and Jane Fonda. LGBTQ+ issues, mental health, body positivity and social justice are some of the topics that Lovato is set to discuss.
