They open up about how they started, their fears, income, how much they save and more — all while giving us an intimate look at their homes. In this original series, transparency is at the root of the conversation as we aim to break down barriers and seek the truth behind what it’s really like to start a business in Canada.

Meet Shanelle McKenzie: co-founder of The Villij, mixing entrepreneurship with her 9-5 job

After meeting her co-founder at a corporate job, the two set out to be the change they wanted to see in the world. They’d often to go yoga classes where they didn’t see many people who looked like them. That’s when The Villij was born — an affordable and culturally-adaptive wellness platform for women of colour. The platform bridges the gap by connecting women of colour to expertise from wellness practitioners and finance coaches.

It’s the first time that I realized that I could do something forever.

Outside of her blooming enterprise, McKenzie also works as a Coordinator at an insurance company. Want advice on how to manage a business outside of your 9-5? Watch Shanelle’s episode to find out how she does it.
