Deck the halls with boughs of gay with Clea DuVall’s lady loving romantic comedy, Happiest Season starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. The trailer just dropped — and though 2020 has been a dumpster fire year, the LGBTQ+ representation in this upcoming festive flick has us wanting to cozy up with our gal pals and watch KStew go home for the holigays with her girlfriend.
The last big lesbian festive treat we snacked on in pop culture was half a decade ago when Carol starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara hit theatres. This time, we follow KStew heading home for the holidays to meet her girlfriend’s family — and finding out just before their arrival that she’s not out yet and they’ll be playing straight during this visit.
“I just woke up thinking about about going home with you and got very excited about Christmas,” KStew says in character to Davis’ character early in the trailer. “I get to meet the people who made my favourite person.”
These lines are obviously delivered before the queer pair are on the road to Harper’s (Davis) family home — when we discover that Harper has told her family that Abby (KStew) is her “orphan friend” — cue hilarity and hijinks and the inevitable feel-good sensation bound to wash over you before the end credits.
The Happiest Season cast includes Schitt’s Creek‘s Dan Levy, Parks and Recreation‘s Aubrey Plaza, Glow‘s Alison Brie, Mary Steenburgen and other names you’ve seen in good comedies.
Let’s also take a moment to acknowledge the LGBTQ+ representation happening behind the scenes with director and actress DuVall making sure the story is properly told. DuVall has been bringing positive LGBTQ+ representation on-screen in films such as But I’m a Cheerleader and The Intervention over the years — but she’s been doing it behind the camera too, promoting lesbian representation in Veep, The Handmaid’s Tale and other projects.
