Here at Slice.ca, we’re always interviewing the experts about dating. New idea? Ask my 85-year-old grandma and 10-year-old niece for dating tips. My grandma Betty got married in 1953 at 18-years-old to my grandpa George. They were married for 44 years until my grandpa passed away. She’s sweet and stoic and although quite reserved, often surprises you with a super witty or sarcastic comment. My niece Kaiya is 10 and doesn’t know a life without the Internet. She’s silly, sensitive and too smart for her own good. Oh, also, my seven-year-old nephew Kieran chimed in a few times too. The interview results? Quite entertaining and surprisingly insightful.

How did you meet grandpa? How long did you date before you went steady/got married?
Grandma says: We met on a blind date, set up by your grandpa’s friend who lived five miles down the road. In those days, you’d only go out once a week, on a Saturday night. Sometimes Wednesdays too if things got really serious. We dated for about two years before we got married.

If someone is single, where do they meet people?
Grandma says: School, I think. If you’re meeting someone when you’re a bit older after you’re done school, best not to meet someone at any “unsavoury” places like a bar. Best to meet someone at a church group or travel group, if they have those.

What are the best activities for a first date?
Grandma says: Going out for dinner. Nothing fancy, something like a hamburger or hot dog. Actually! The first time I ever had a grilled cheese sandwich was on a date with your grandpa. Also, try to go out on dates in groups: less pressure and it's safer.

What are the best activities for a first date?
Niece says: Go out to a restaurant or take a walk or something. At a restaurant, you’d go somewhere fancy. You wouldn’t want to go to McDonald's — although I would!

After how long of dating someone, should their family meet them?
Niece says: Like definitely under a year, maybe a month or two. You wouldn’t want to wait too long, but after a week I don’t want to come over and be like “hiiiii!”

When should someone get married and/or move in with a partner?
Niece says: You probably would want to move in after a couple months. Because if it’s the first week and then if you break up — some relationships don’t last long — you’d have nowhere to go. So, after a few months move in with them and then after a few months get married.
Nephew says: When they’re 25 or 26. Maybe like seven years they should know each other first. They should get married and then live together.
