Once upon a very recent time, cannabis use — whether it was recreational or for medicinal purposes — was something people did in secret. A fear of reefer madness reinforced the already-stigmatized substance. Now that it’s legal in Canada and some American states, that’s changing.
All along though, a handful of A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and others have been open about its use. Here are 10 times that celebrities have been open about their cannabis use—and challenged the status quo.

When Whoopi Goldberg declared her love for her vape pen
Long before Whoopi Goldberg founded Whoopi & Maya, her line of medical cannabis products for women, she publicly declared her love for her constant companion: Sippy, her vape pen.
“I named her Sippy because I take tiny, little sips—sassy sips, even—from her,” Goldberg wrote of the device, which she says aids in managing glaucoma-induced headaches. “I love my Sippy, it’s true.”

When Snoop Dogg transformed into Snoop Lion
It’s hard to choose one definitive moment that Snoop was open about his cannabis use — mainly because it happens on the regular. However, who can forget when the rapper transformed into his alter ego, Snoop Lion? If you’ve never seen the truly incredible 2012 documentary Reincarnated — which captures Snoop’s exploration of Rastafari faith — you’re missing out.

When Miley Cyrus smoked-up on stage
So, 2013 was a weird year for Miley. There was that time she twerked up on a Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs, and the time she repeatedly licked a hammer in her video for “Wrecking Ball.” It was also the year she lit a joint on stage at the MTV European Music Awards in Amsterdam, making her use of cannabis an open affair.
Although she no longer smokes cannabis when she’s working, she’s been open about her use, even recently posting a picture on Instagram with the words “weed makes you happy.”

When Seth Rogen defined an entire movie genre
If it wasn’t for Canadian actor Seth Rogen, the film category “stoner action comedy” might have never existed. One of our favourites is Pineapple Express. He didn’t just write and star in the film. He had a hands-on role — literally. He and co-writer Evan Goldberg had to roll about 100 cross joints for the movie because “nobody else on the crew could roll them properly.”
It’s been 10 years since the movie was released, but Rogen’s career is still on fire (so to speak): Earlier this year, he worked with Goldberg and has been working in the Canadian cannabis industry to launch new brands.

When Jennifer Lawrence admitted she was high at the Oscars
As if J-Law wasn’t relatable enough, in 2015 she admitted to talk show host Andy Cohen that she smoked before attending the Academy Awards. "I saw my brother smoking out of a bong before one of the Oscars," she told Cohen. When asked if she took a hit, she said, "Yes."
Verdict’s still out on what ceremony it was at, but Lawrence hasn’t been shy about her cannabis use, since admitting on the Howard Stern Show that she also “smoked a joint with some rappers” at Ellen’s 60th birthday party.

When Susan Sarandon admitted she was high at every awards show except the Oscars
Jennifer Lawrence may have smoked cannabis before the Oscars, but Susan Sarandon didn’t. Why? Because it’s the possibly only awards show that she attends without using cannabis first.
When Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen asked Susan to name a major Hollywood event she showed up to stoned, this was her answer: “Only one? I would say almost all except the Oscars.”
A cannabis user since the ‘60s, the 73-year-old told The High Times in 2015 that she’s a “huge believer that if more people smoked — not just for medicinal purposes, but for lifestyle purposes, instead of drinking — the world would be a better place.”

When Martha Stewart bragged that she can roll a joint
By now, you probably know about Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg’s unlikely friendship. However, they have more in common than a love of cooking. Stewart claims that her propensity for perfection extends to joint rolling. On Andy Cohen’s show (where else?), Stewart told the talk show host “I know how to roll a joint.”
With that being said, Stewart says she doesn’t light up. She does, however, use CBD topical products for an aching tendon. This year, she even partnered with cannabis company to launch her own CBD product line, which includes pet treats, cosmetics and food.

When Lady Gaga used it to take her creativity to new levels
It’s hard to believe that Lady Gaga would ever need a hand with her creative development. (Did y’all not see her MET Gala entrance this year?) But not only does Gaga use cannabis to help deal with her chronic pain, she also uses it in the studio. Maybe that’s part the reason why she was named by Rolling Stone as one of the “50 most successful marijuana enthusiasts.”

When Rihanna owned up to her use before the tabloids could spin a tale
The “bad girl” frequently posts pictures of her lifestyle choices on Instagram and Twitter, and she’s got a good reason to do so — owning up to her cannabis use helps keep the vultures at bay.
"I'll never be a victim. That's why I'm posting pictures of myself smoking pot, to tell the truth about myself. I've got so much to think about — why bring all this extra sh*t by being dishonest?" she told Elle UK in 2013.

When Morgan Freeman advocated for the legalization of cannabis
What’s more soothing that the dulcet tones of Morgan Freeman’s narrations? The knowledge that he’s a long-time advocate of changes to cannabis legislation. In 2003, the actor famously told the Guardian in 2003 that he’d “never give up the ganja."
The actor suffers from fibromyalgia pain and has said that the “only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.” He’s never shied away from this stance and in 2015 reiterated that he believes cannabis should be legalized “across the board.”
