Hair, like other 2019 style trends, is embracing the culture of undoing. From short hairstyles to hair colour trends, it’s all about the undoing of past silences in light of social wrongs; the undoing of unrealistic expectations of what all women must look like and the general undoing of over-done.
This course-correction means no try-hard tresses (save for the occasional sleek bun here and there). Summer 2019 is about embracing natural beauty, in all its glorious variety — and a recognition that we’re all a work in progress — hair included.
Here are the summer hairstyles that are making us to do a double-take.

This is the look you want when you want to dress up your style, but still stay true to its laid back, playful side. Emma Roberts nails this half-up top knot.

Mix it up: go au naturale
#HairTrendsFor2019
"Working with what your hair wants to do naturally, always makes it look healthiest," says Lisa Vallar, a colour technician with Capelli Hair Salon in Toronto. Here we say, embrace and rock what your mama gave you. Yara Shahidi's curls are stunning in their own right.

The ‘70s shag cut
#HairStyleTrends2019
Think: Nil Ninat's shag haircut or Ferrah Fawcett cut with bangs. You want some length, but also bangs to contrast that length. To style your coif, you'll want a trusty hair drier, but it needn't be one of these most expensive beauty products in the world.RELATED: 18 celebrities who give us major bangs envy

Blunt bob
#ShortHairStyles
We love Julianne Hough's look at the 2019 Billboard Music Awsards. This style is a blunt, chopped look that doesn’t have a lot of treatment at the tips. You want the hair to look slightly “unfinished” and left alone. And here is another cool-toned blonde colour that will be popular throughout the summer.

Mix it up: blunt lob
#ShortHairStyles
This is another slightly longer variant on the bob, for the woman that still wants some length, but the cut essentially remains the same. The idea is to cut straight across, with not much layering or treatment of the tips. Note Camila Coelho's also the chestnut / hazelnut brown shade that we will also be seeing more throughout the summer.RELATED: Beauty detox: 10 tips to remove toxins from hair and skin

Medium-length hair
#LongHairTrends2019
Think of this as the growing-out length hair. It’s not quite a lob, nor is it the kind of length that makes us take note for its sheer length, but it stands on its own terms. We're also loving Halle Berry's "honey bronde" shade.

Mix it up: have fun with colour
#HairColourIdeas
Pastel-coloured and rainbow hair colour trends are continuing into the summer in all manner of shade; pink, blue, violet. Take note of another trend in Maisie Williams' hair that’ll feature heavily this summer.

Long braids
#HairTrends2019
Length here is part of the story. Long braids, whether single, tight or loose, fishtailed or otherwise, you want to showcase them in creative ways that become part of your outfit. We love Tessa Thompson's look here.

Mix it up: accessorize
#2019HairAccessories
Colourful statement headbands, fun clips, bows and pins - it’s all fair game with this more-is-more, playing adult dress-up look. Sister to Gigi, equally famous Bella Hadid is known for drastic cuts and switching up her hairstyle, so it's no surprise Gigi too may embrace the playfulness.
