Raise your hand if you’ve recently added Miley Cyrus’ new single “Flowers” to your single girl or breakup anthem playlist.

The 30-year-old singer released the song on Jan. 13 — as the lead single in her upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacation. “Flowers” has been voted by fans as Billboard’s favourite new music of the week, and it’s garnered the attention of fans all over TikTok and the internet checking every detail that apparently throws shade at her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

From the music video to the lyrics (and the release date), we’re diving deep into all the apparent links connecting the dots between Cyrus and Hemsworth’s relationship — that we know of so far.

How long were Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth together?

According to Cosmopolitan, the ex-couple were together (on and off) for 10 years. They met back in 2009 while filming their movie The Last Song. After calling it quits and reuniting, the actor proposed to The Hannah Montana star in June 2012

The following year, Hemsworth and Cyrus reportedly ended their engagement, but got back together again in 2016. The then-pair then got married in Dec. 2018 as the “Wrecking Ball” singer confirmed it in an Instagram post, according to PEOPLE, where she shared photos of their wedding day writing: “12.23.18…this is probably our one-millionth kiss.”

By August 2019, the pair announced their split after eight months of marriage.

All the Liam Hemsworth rumoured references in ‘Flowers’

As Cosmopolitan reports, the song was released on Jan. 13 AKA Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday. (Coincidence? It may be, but this one does seem ring true and to that, we say burn.

Fans also think that the song responds to Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man,” which is reportedly (though unconfirmed) a song that the Hunger Games alum once dedicated to Cyrus, according to some outlets. The chorus of “Flowers” is indeed very similar and could be seen as a response. Cyrus sings “I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours…” as parallel to “I should have bought you flowers, And held your hand / Should have gave you all my hours, when I had the chance.”

In the music video, Cyrus wears an oversized suit, which fans on Twitter note is very similar to the suit the actor wore at the Avengers: Endgame premiere the then couple attended together.

The singer also walks down a street before doing a little dance that eagle-eyed fans have put together is similar to a video clip of her doing the same dance on her ex-husband at a red-carpet event, where his response leaves her looking embarrassed.

It’s also been speculated that some lyrics may reference when the “Malibu” singer and the younger Hemsworth brother’s house burned down in the California wildfires. In an interview with Rolling Stone following their divorce, Cosmopolitan reports that the fire brought them together and was a contributing factor in them getting married.

Recently, TikTok users have been speculating that Cyrus might allude to Hemsworth cheating on her with his Hunger Game co-star Jennifer Lawrence in the clip, according to OK! Magazine. In the video, Cyrus dons a golden dress that rivals the likes of the gown Lawrence wore to the film’s premiere. Plus, Lawrence has previously told Andy Cohen that she’s gotten intimate with Hemsworth before.

“It has recently been rumoured that you and Liam Hemsworth had some PDA at the Waverly Inn,” Cohen said. “Have you two ever kissed when the cameras weren’t rolling?”

“Liam and I grew up together. Liam’s real hot. What would you have done?” Lawrence remarked before saying, “Yeah, I have.”

Although the references haven’t been confirmed by the Grammy-nominated artist, fans are here for the new Miley era, and dare we say: we love to see it.
