Demi Lovato knows we’re not alone. Flying saucers, other beings who live in outer space, extraterrestrial abductions — they believe in all of it, but that’s not surprising. If you listen to this free-thinking multi-hyphenate artist speak for long enough, you’ll understand that their mind is willing to go where most won’t. Their new show Unidentified with Demi Lovato explores another side of Lovato that we haven’t seen before, as they seek the truth around UFO phenomena that has been teasing us for decades. “It has nothing to do with my career,” Lovato tells us. “It’s just kind of like a fun side project that I do in my own downtime, and I thought, ‘why not make a show of it?’”
Lovato’s sister, Dallas, and best friend, Matthew, tag along for the ride, investigating eyewitness accounts, exposing secret government reports and visiting UFO hot spots. However, the show is more than just an investigation into the unknown — the first episode reveals that Lovato experiences a very real connection with these otherworldly beings. In a recent interview, they even challenged the use of the word “alien,” calling it derogatory, and dispelled the idea that ETs want to invade our planet.

When we asked what Lovato thinks ETs are like, their mind didn’t conjure up images of wide-eyed little green men. Instead, their idea suggested more of a feeling of alikeness than anything else. “I have this theory that they look a lot more like us than we think,” Lovato mused. “I don’t really believe in little green men that are running around Mars. I feel like they’re further than Mars, but closer than we think. And… they may look like humans.” Naturally, we wanted to know more, so we spoke to Lovato about the show, other paranormal activities and upcoming projects.

Demi wants extraterrestrials to answer this one question
Let’s be real — things have been strange here on Earth recently. At this point, if a UFO landed, would we really be surprised? It almost seems like the natural next chapter in this bizarro saga we’re living in. And if there is life beyond our planet, they’ve definitely noticed that something’s off. In 2020, Canadians reported more UFO sightings than ever before, averaging three sightings a day. Our neighbours to the south saw the same spike in sightings, with most of them happening in March and April when most of the world went into lockdown. “I think they’re probably worried for us, as we all should be,” Lovato surmises. “This world can be a much better place if we were all to expand our consciousness and try to make steps towards enlightenment.”
If a UFO did land and Lovato could speak to them, they wouldn’t ask about where they live, what they want, or anything that has baffled astrophysicists for years. Instead, Lovato believes ETs have been watching closely, and they would have one simple question for them: “What can we do to make this world a better place?”

We can’t help but think that Lovato often asks themself this same question. Throughout their career, they’ve made news for speaking up about issues that are usually seen as taboo, whether it’s mental illness, addiction or sexual identity. They’re relentless when it comes to trying to raise our collective consciousness and redefine what we think of as ‘normal.’ That usually comes at a price, though — Lovato fields all kinds of hate from every dark crevice of the internet. But, Lovato isn’t focused on that, saying there’s really only one thing that makes them feel truly different. “When everybody else is looking down at their phones, I’m looking up at the stars and I’m wondering what’s up there? And so, I find myself looking at the sky all the time.”

Understanding their identity has been a work-in-progress
Earlier this year, Lovato opened up about being both non-binary and pansexual, announcing through their podcast that they use the pronouns they/them. As one of the biggest celebrities to come out as non-binary in recent years, Lovato represents a huge step for the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to visibility and representation. When it comes to better understanding one’s identity, they know how hard it can be, and looks to impart some sage advice for anyone on the same path. “It’s not an overnight journey. And even when you think you have it figured out, you’re still going to learn things about yourself that you never knew,” they admitted. “But that’s a part of life, and that’s why we’re all here — to learn more things about ourselves.”

Take it from someone who does that well. Lovato seems to be on a committed journey to learn more about themself, with a career spanning Disney, music and now this investigative docuseries that appears to come out of left field. Naturally, they’re already thinking about their next move. “I would love to go back to acting,” the Grammy-nominated singer says. In the past, they’ve also called Canada their second home because it’s where they filmed Camp Rock. “And so, hopefully that’ll happen in the near future.” But Lovato’s favourite part of their career wasn’t the acting. “My favourite stage of my career is the one that I’m in right now because there’s so much freedom to try different things, do new things and try different stuff. So I think it’s… it’s right now.”
