I Tried Using Yogurt as a Hair Mask and This Is What Happened

If you have curly hair like me, you probably live by this golden rule: the curls must be poppin’ at all times. My curls have a mind of their own most days — they never dry quite the same way and can be prone to dryness, which is why I’m all about keeping them conditioned and moisturized. In the name of curl health, I decided to try using yogurt as a hair mask to see if it would make my tresses happy.

Why yogurt?

We all know that yogurt is great for our bodies, packed with probiotics, protein and calcium. With that said, some people say that the protein and fruit in this delicious snack can also boost hair health. I opted to slather my strands in yogurt with honey, because honey is great at making your hair shiny, strong and moisturized. If you have thin hair, yogurt might be a bit too heavy for you, but if you’re someone with frizzy strands, yogurt could be the key to infusing your hair with some extra TLC.

How do you use yogurt as a hair mask?

According to healthline, you should apply yogurt to your hair when it is dry to get the best results. Because I have curly hair, I only wash it once or twice a week to avoid making it brittle and dry, so I decided to do the mask on a wash day. I separated and detangled my hair with a wide-tooth comb and then applied the yogurt with my fingers going section by section. When I finished, I put it up and then covered it with a shower cap to let the yogurt fully sink in. I always use more product than the recommended amount because my hair is long, so I used about a quarter of my yogurt container.

I left the yogurt in my hair for about 40 minutes while I did some chores, and then proceeded to do my regular hair routine in the shower. I rinsed out the yogurt and then washed my hair with my SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo and then followed that with the matching conditioner. After applying the Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk from the same line, I went outside for a walk and let everything air-dry.

The results: did it work?

After coming home from my walk and letting the sun help dry my hair, my curls looked pretty nice. I wouldn’t say I noticed a dramatic difference in terms of my hair looking shinier or less frizzy, but it definitely felt pretty soft, which was great.

I don’t think I would use yogurt as a hair mask every time I wash my hair, but I think I would use it as a hydrating treatment once or twice a month. Curly hair can get knotted pretty easily, and I did find that the yogurt helped with detangling in the shower. The next time I decide to do a yogurt mask, I think I’ll mix it with some Argan oil to give my mane some extra slip.
