As if we weren’t already amped up for HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special on New Year’s Day, but now we’ve been gifted with a tease regarding star Emma Watson’s major crush on Tom Felton, the actor who played Draco Malfoy, one of the franchise’s many villains. Hermione crushing on the enemy? It’s actually a cute story.
“I walked into the room where we were having tutoring,’ Watson recalled in Return to Hogwarts. “The assignment that had been given was to draw what you thought God looked like, and Tom had drawn a girl with a backward cap on a skateboard. And I just don’t how to say it — I just fell in love with him.
According to ET Canada, she added, “I used to come in every day and look for his number on the call sheet — it was number seven — and if his name was on the call sheet, it was an extra exciting day. He was three years above me and so for him he was like, ‘you’re like my little sister.'”
The revelation, however, doesn’t come as a surprise to Felton. “I think I was in the hair and make-up chair and someone said something along the lines of, ‘Yeah, she had a crush on you,'” he said. “I became very protective over her. Yeah, I’ve always had a soft spot for her and that continues to the day. There’s always been something that’s like, I don’t know, a kinship.”
As every Harry Potter fan knows, rumours have raged on for years that Watson and Felton were secretly an item. To this day, they continue to share photos of each other hanging out on their social media accounts.
Alas, there’s still no evidence that the pair were ever anything more than BFFs. “[Nothing] ever, ever, ever happened romantically,” Watson says in the HBO Max special. “[But we] just love each other.”
Watson is currently dating American businessman Leo Robinton, while Felton was previously linked to his Harry Potter costar Jade Olivia Gordon (who played his wife in Astoria Greengrass in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2).
