What is Diwali?

Recognized as India’s biggest holiday of the year, according to PEOPLE, Diwali takes place annually over five days in October or November (this year, it begins on October 24 to align with then the new moon is darkest).

While it may be celebrated a bit differently for people of different cultures and religions (it’s typically celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists), Diwali is a celebration of light – with lights like lamps, lanterns and fireworks used as decoration and to symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

“I love seeing my neighborhood being lit up with lights and diyas, and then coming out at night and doing fireworks after Puja – I think that is probably my favourite part of Diwali,” Ankita says in her TikTok.

“Diwali is always such an exciting time of the year for me. It’s festival season: there are so many events to attend, so much delicious food,” Ankita explains, adding that it’s also an opportunity “to spend time with family and friends.”
