‘Angel Eyes’: Could This Ethereal Eye Makeup Trend Take Over in 2023?

A new year means it’s time for new makeup trends, and the start of 2023 has launched the latest ethereal eye look – “angel eyes.”

This year looks like it’ll be all about duality, with the rise of darker, dramatic makeup styles like goth glam and marinated makeup alongside delicate, elegant looks with clean nail polishes and the latest: angel eyes.

What are angel eyes?

Celebrity makeup artist Joy Adenuga explains to POPSUGAR that the “angel eyes” trend is when you create a sublime, “angelic” look with “your eyes [as the centre] stage of your makeup.”

Boasting soft, shimmery tones, this look – which rose to popularity back in the early aughts – serves as a sort of counter to the rise of Wednesdaycore. Most often, “angel eyes” involves using white eyeshadow or eyeliner alongside frosty shades and bright, glossy glitter.

“The classic ‘angel’ trend is to use mostly white, a colour most people are not comfortable wearing,” Adenuga adds. “Another way you can nail the trend from home is by swapping the white for coloured-yet-frosted shades such as bright lilacs, sky blue, mint green and more.”

If you’re hoping to channel the “angel eyes” look, it’s time to hone in on simplicity. It’s not about blending together multiple colours — it’s more about a minimal, clean swipe of a frosty shadow.

Ultimately, with the angel eyes look, the way you apply your eyeshadow makes all the difference.

“Pressing, not rubbing, will ensure maximum glitter pay-off and minimal fallout,” makeup artist Tommy Napoli tells Allure.

In terms of the rest of the look, it’s really up to you. Whether you’d rather go for a nude lip or a bold liner, the beauty of the frosty angel eye is that it’s an adaptable trend that can fit with a big range of styles.
