Celebrity tattoos get more visibility than the rest of us — and the decision to get one is not something that anyone should go into lightly. Permanent ink is a big deal and while it can always be laser-removed, that’s a lot of pain to go through to fix a mistake. But for these celebs, they thought their tatts through — and still wound up with some not-so-great results. Bless their hearts.

Ben Affleck
In 2015, photos of Affleck surfaced where he was on a beach, shirtless and sporting a massive tattoo on his back. It was deemed fake at the time, but years later, the actor confirmed that the colourful phoenix coming out of his butt was indeed real and that he doesn't hate it or regret it. The best thing to come of it all? Ex-wife Jennifer Garner's thoughts on it and the magnificent lady shade she threw out there.

Ariana Grande
Ariane Grande loves the Japanese culture so much she attempted to get "7 Rings" inked in Japanese on her palm. But she didn't love the Japanese culture enough to triple-check that she got the correct translation. And instead, because of some bungled up characters, her tattoo translated to "shichirin," which roughly means a small charcoal grill. Her attempt to fix it ended up roughly translating to "small charcoal grill finger" with a heart and, well, she clearly needs a new translator. Or not. After being accused of cultural appropriation, we're thinking she's going to stick to her native language here on out.

Rihanna
The lovely RiRi got "rebelle fleur" inked on her neck. Pretty, sure, but while in English, adjectives come before the subject that is being described, the rule is the opposite for French so it should actually have read "fleur rebelle." So instead of reading as "rebellious flower" like we presume the singer wanted, it translates to "flower rebel." If you're going to go to the trouble of getting something in another language tattooed on your body, you need to make sure it's perfect.

Hayden Panettiere
The Nashville actress' tattoo was supposed to say "vivere senza rimipianti," which means “live without regrets" in Italian but since the last word was misspelled, it ended up being something that would eventually be removed.

Drake
Back in the day, Drake's Twitter handle used to be @DrakkardNoir. Sure, whatever. But getting a bottle of Drakkar Noir tattooed on his shoulder, even if the attempt was to be ironic, is still just a bad idea.

Kelsey Grammer
Kelsey's fourth wife, Kayte Walsh, made him get a tattoo of her name in "the pubis" area so he wouldn't cheat on her. If anything, it's silly on Kayte's part because as IF that's going to stop him if that's what he feels like doing. Considering how they got together, the irony isn't lost on us.

Kat Von D
It should be a rule that you don't get a portrait tattoo of a lover. Case in point: Von D. The tattoo artist got then-fiancee Jesse James' fifth-grade school photo inked underneath her armpit. It was meant to be a surprise for him (though he called her "crazy" when she revealed it) but what wasn't surprising? That they broke up shortly after. At least Kat has so many tattoos — including her ex-husband's face on her leg — that Jesse's feathered hair and rainbow shirt can easily just get lost in all the other art on her body.

Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp's knuckles tattoo used to say "SLIM," which was his nickname for then-wife Amber Heard. After their divorce, Depp changed the tattoo to say "SCUM" instead. Perfect.

Post Malone
The rapper sports six face tattoos (at press time, at least) but "Always Tired" might be the worst. Shouldn't the bags under his eyes be statement enough?

Kendall Jenner
Kendall was drunk when she got "meow" tattooed onto the inside of her lip. She told Ellen DeGeneres, "There’s no real meaning behind it — I just wanted to be able to say that I have a tattoo on my face!" Okaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Adrienne Bailon
Long before Blac Chyna, there was Bailon, and she and Rob Kardashian dated from 2007 to 2009. During that time, they decided to get their names tattooed on the other so Rob got "Adrienne E. Bailon" inked on his left ribcage — she got "Robert A. Kardashian" tatted on her butt. She told her The Real co-hosts that it was a bad idea, saying, "Everybody knows I have the ratchet-iest booty tattoo of an ex-boyfriend. I don't know what I was thinking."

Soulja Boy
Crank back that Soulja Boy! The rapper's face was once filled with luxury high-end brands, from the Bentley logo on his temple to the Gucci logo between his eyes. He was in the process of removing the Gucci tatt, but perhaps one treatment was painful enough as it's still there, albeit a little fainter.

Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling's tattoo is the perfect example of why you should leave tattooing to professionals. "One of my tattoos is supposed to be a monster's hand dropping a bloody heart," he explained, "but I did it myself with a tattoo kit, so it looks like a cactus." Sigh.

Nicole Richie
When Richie was 16, she got "virgin" inked on her wrist, not as a sexual thing but purely astrological as she's a Virgo. Nevertheless, the teasing was relentless and she has since called it "embarrassing and desperate."

Stephen Baldwin
Justin Bieber's father-in-law reportedly got the initials of Hannah Montana tattooed on him so she would give him a guest-starring role on the show. She didn't. So not only did he NOT get the gig but he's stuck with the initials of a fictional Disney character that is no longer on TV. Not sure if Miley Cyrus was flattered or embarrassed by it.

Steve clearly loves himself a LOT — indicated by the giant self-portrait on his back with the words, "Yeah dude, I rock!" underneath.

Chanel Iman
The model has a simple wire hanger with her name underneath inked on the back of her neck. Her reasoning? "You put clothes on a hanger, and you put clothes on a model. It represents being a model." Possibly the most literal tattoo to ever be tattooed.

Megan Fox
Megan Fox has "We will all laugh at gilded butterflies," a paraphrased quote from Shakespeare's King Lear. Like, really paraphrased as the actual text reads " ... so we'll live, and pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh at gilded butterflies." Isn't sacrilege to get Sir William that wrong?

Gucci Mane
According to his spokesperson, the rapper got the three-scoop ice cream cone and "brrr" tattooed on his face as "a reminder to fans of how he chooses to live his life. Cool as ice. As in 'I'm so icy, I'll make ya say Brrr.'" We. Can't. Even.
