For most of us, packing is one of the hardest things about travel. With baggage weight and size restrictions, it’s hard to bring everything along that we would like to. But in reality, we actually don’t need a lot of things that we think we will. Packing less will make your life much easier. And if there is something you absolutely need — often, you can just go buy it. To help pare down your packing list, here are 11 things that most people pack (or pack too much of) and never use.

Clothes
Travellers always pack too many clothes. We pack for many seasons and every conceivable event. But you don't need three pairs of jeans or a half-dozen tops for a weekend away. Cut way, way back and, if you need something, just buy it! It'll be a treat, a nice reminder of your trip and, because you packed light, you'll have room in your suitcase!

Extra shoes
Same deal as with clothes. Bring what's required for your destination and not a single pair more. You should be able to get away with three pairs at most. A pair of decent, functional shoes for going out, a pair of walking shoes/hiking boots if your holiday is outdoorsy and a pair of flip flops (although you can buy cheap ones at your destination). Your comfiest shoes should be one of the 20 items you should always pack in your carry-on or the ones you wear on board.

Too many electronics
Another mistake is packing too many electronic devices. Do you really need a smartphone, MP3 player, tablet, ebook reader and a laptop plus all the assorted cables and chargers? Unless you're working on the road, you can leave most everything behind. We recommend a smartphone — as it can double as a music player, internet device and ebook reader.

Money belt
This is something that most people buy before their first big trip abroad — and never use it. A bulging money belt or pouch gives you away as a tourist — especially when you pull it out in public. Carry just what you need and lock up the rest in the hotel safe. Better yet, use a credit card and carry only a little bit of local currency.

Water filters
If you're worried about drinking suspect water abroad, a water filter sounds like a good idea. And it is, if you're going for an extended adventure off the beaten path. But if you're sticking to well travelled spots, you can buy bottled water everywhere (but you may want to skip the airport, seeing as its one of the worst rip-offs at the airport). Just make sure to check the cap to ensure you're not buying a bottle that's been refilled with tap water. Another option is a refillable water bottle that has a built-in filter.

Workout gear
If you think you're going to hit the gym while on holiday, sorry, you won't. You're on vacation, remember? Pack beachwear to take advantage of being near the water or staying somewhere with a pool. But the rest of it can stay home.

Towel
Not only do they take up a lot of room, you'll probably never use a towel brought from home. Don't worry, you'll find plenty of towels everywhere you go. And if you don't, head to the local market and buy a cheap one. It'll be a great chance to meet new people and speak to some locals. (You know Canadians are loved abroad, right?)

Makeup
This is another area where it's easy to pack way too much. Take the absolute basics and, if you need something special for a night out, just pick it up at your destination or at duty-free in the airport.

DSLR Camera
Unless you're a pro photographer, you don't need to bring that fancy big camera and assorted lenses. Today's smartphones are smaller, easier to use and the pictures still look great. Plus, you won't look like a tourist.

‘What if’ Stuff
You can pretty much justify bringing anything with you if you want it for a 'what if' situation. In reality, you likely won't use the 'what if' item. Instead, buy anything you truly need at your destination. It's that simple.

Fashion hats
It can be tempting to bring your collection of fashion hats for destination photo shoots — but because of their awkward shapes, hats take up a lot of prime real estate in your bags. Instead, wear a practical, fashionable hat on the plane and maybe pack a snap-back or cap, but avoid hauling your whole collection.
