When celebrities hit the red carpet rocking their own spin on the latest trends, it’s usually more “hit” than “miss” – but every now and then, they hit that grey area in between where, well, we just aren’t sure what to think. Here we’ve rounded up some of the most recent red carpet looks that have us wondering – why?

Cut it out – seriously, just stop
For the Atomic Blonde film premiere, actress Josephine Ochoa showed up in this barely-there ensemble, no doubt inspired by the recent trend in cut-outs and lace-up details. We have about as much love for this look as Josephine has coverage, which is to say, little to none.

A little too see-through
Actress Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace steps out in a sheer gown with a slit that apparently knows no limits.

How high can you go?
Following in the trend of high-slits, Carla Howe combined this, the wrap-dress trend, bubblegum-pink hair and a black lace thong for her red carpet ensemble. All we’re wondering is… why, Carla, why?

About to take flight
Sleeves are big right now. From embellished to voluminous, frayed and ruffled, sleeves are undergoing a major update for the season. And while we love the many ways celebrities have been making this trend their own, we feel a little flighty (see what we did there?) about the way Betty Bachz wore hers to a recent premiere.

Cleavage overload
So the less-is-more trend is in, we get it. And who are we to criticize style-icon Rihanna? But let’s get real: that bust-line is about to burst…

A little more trashy than classy
Charlize Theron is a bombshell. She could make a burlap sack look like couture. That being said, we were beyond disappointed to see this Barbie-inspired two-piece make the cut for one of her recent red carpet appearances.

Missing: single balloon sleeve
It could be that Pandora simply didn’t notice one of her sleeves was missing when she hit the red carpet in this bizarre satin print gown, but we may have to accept that the single sleeve was part of the design from the get-go. It’s hard to believe that with everything else going on, someone thought this dress needed one more (or less) feature…

Hold the ruffles, please
When the ruffle trend goes very, very wrong. Actress Pom Klementieff arrives on the red carpet for the premiere of Ingrid Goes West in Hollywood.

Twinning, but not winning
Actors Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen on a red carpet in matching dresses may seem second nature for Olsen, who grew up with famous twins for siblings, but we aren’t loving the double feature of this mod-style mini.

Space schoolgirl?
While we love the idea of preppy plaid, and are totally on board with the metallic/sparkly boot trend, there is nothing about these two styles mashed up on actress Mae Whitman that seems to be working. It doesn’t help that she’s added an ill-fitting black button-up into the mix – might we suggest a new stylist?

Enough with the mommy-and-me fashion already
So aside from the fact that Rachel Roy and her daughter Tallulah Ruth are both gorgeous – darn those genetics! – we just can’t get on board with the mommy-and-me twinning trend. As it usually ends up, either the mom looks like an overgrown preschooler or the kid looks ridiculously mature. In this case, it’s safe to say Rachel pulled the short end of the stick for this red carpet.

Maybe the wrong kind of statement…
Statement jewellery and accessories have been in for a while now, but not even Cara Delevingne seems sure about this fashion choice.

We love feathers and fringe – just not together
Sunglasses, bubblegum pink shades, feathers and fringe – there’s just too much going on here Riri… we love her funky spin on of-the-moment trends, but this outfit just feels a little overloaded.

A little too X-tra on the red carpet…
In true Xtina fashion, Christina Aguilera showed up to the red carpet wearing her own funky spin on the latest trend. This time she took on the graphic print trend with an overhaul of accessories, making her look more like a walking cartoon than the blonde bombshell that she actually is.

Casual is not always cool…
Head to toe denim and remixed casual footwear have been major trends as of late, but we’re guessing Whoopi missed the memo on just how to do it by the looks of this frumpy ensemble and bizarre choice of Crocs to complete the look.
