Once the height of chic, these red carpet staples are victims of overexposure. Perhaps it’s time for them to go to the land of bootcut jeans and Juicy Couture suits, also known as fashion purgatory.

Figure skating style
Great for figure skaters, but not so posh on the red carpet, sheer panels have always been hit or miss. It’s understandable that some actresses may want more coverage (or to try and avoid the nipple-slip police), but sheer panelling can take a look from daring to dowdy, quickly.

The nude look
Sheer, sparkly, strategically placed beading--what was once an OMG moment has gotten a little pedestrian. We of course think J.Lo and Beyonce look incredible, but when half the gowns on the carpet are going for the nude look, wearing more would actually be a bigger fashion risk.

Mermaid fit and train
A mermaid train may scream, “Formal!” but it also whispers, “Seriously, girl?” Red carpet stylists seem to default to the mermaid look--fitted through the bust and waist, flared at the bottom, sometimes with a train for extra effect. The dress is so ubiquitous on red carpets that wearing one feels like a non-event--it’s more suited to a seat filler than an A-lister.

Passe Platforms
With such intense focus on the dress, it seems that the shoes never quite get the moment they deserve. Is that why so many actresses opt for the same old style? Peep-toe platform shoes (often seemingly dyed to perfectly match a dress) feel a little too bridesmaid to be trendsetting or stylish.

A (satin) wrinkle in time
Designer gowns are put together with great care, from the initial drawing to the fabric to the construction. There is no detail that is overlooked --except maybe sitting. Many actresses who choose satin dresses find themselves rumpled and wrinkled through no fault of their own.

Sheer skirt overload
Sheer skirts may still be a favourite for prom, but the “skirt over shorts” look is more suited to a music festival than a movie premiere. It can make a long gown look cheap (even if it’s couture) and can make a tea-length gown feel matronly.

Going…going…gladiators
It was supposed to be a summer fling, but it seems like gladiator heels are intent on sticking around. Ever so often they pop up on the red carpet in all their aggresively dated glory. It’s the shoe that stylists turn to when they want an edgy, youthful look, but the result is often overwhelming.

Too much tulle
We aren’t calling for an overall ban on tulle – that would be fashionably unfair. But the go-to princess skirt – puffy and floor-length – is not inspired dressing (unless you are heading to a ball in a golden carriage).

Matching makeup to your outfit
Sure matching your sweater to your eyeshadow was the height of style in middle school, but once the braces come off, a bit more subtlety is required. Yes a black dress can go with a smoky eye, but a blue, lavender or orange dress doesn’t require a colour match. It can end up looking a little like a costume.

Hardcore posing
Hand on the hip, dramatic look over the shoulder, steely eyes-- most A-listers can work a red carpet in their sleep. Posing has hit new levels though with leg juts, extended necks, the double fist-on-hips, and pretzel-like contortions. It’s time to go back to the poses that don’t require a chiropractor on call.

Caped crusaders
Capes fall under the “too much of a good thing” category. We’ve seen so many insanely glamorous capes on the red carpet that it’s difficult to make the look one’s own-- it will always be compared to the fabulous looks that came before it.
