OnlyFans Reverses Controversial Porn Ban

Amid the blowback from sex workers, creators and subscribers, OnlyFans has dropped its upcoming ban on sexually explicit content.

Less than a week ago, OnlyFans had tweeted an impending ban was coming October 1, as a necessary means to secure banking and payment services. This upset many sex workers who relied on the platform for their income. Many creators use the platform to create sexually explicit content for fans to follow and pay for, and OnlyFans is one of the few online platforms where they had agency while making a profit off of their material. The site even reported a 75 per cent increase in new creators last May during lockdown.

On Wednesday, the subscription-based platform announced that it “secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community,” and thus the ban was being reversed. Originally, the company had issues with banks, several of which had refused to do business with the website. Currently, OnlyFans takes 20 per cent of all payments made to its content creators. Now it appears OnlyFans has secured the finances it needed to pay its creators, including those who create porn.

The move to reverse the ban is seen as a win especially for sex workers, many of whom had pivoted to using the platform when the pandemic hit as a way to continue offering their shows and services virtually.

The company reached out to creators in an email, stating: “OnlyFans is committed to providing a safe and dependable platform for all creators and their fans.”
