My thrifting journey began almost four years ago when I moved out on my own. I love clothes (to a borderline unhealthy amount) so I wanted to find a way to shop without spending a ton of money. This is when I fell head-over-heels in love with thrifting. It’s like the ultimate scavenger hunt for fashionistas on a budget. Not only is it a more sustainable way to shop, but you can find one-of-a-kind unique pieces at super low prices. Whether you go alone or with your thrift squad, definitely hit up a thrift store near you and give it a try!
I’m going to share with you my all-time favourite thrift finds to give you some thrift-spiration!
Try thrifting while travelling
I found this neutral-toned printed jacket at Brick Lane Market in London, England back when I was visiting the UK in December of 2018. I love checking out thrift and vintage stores in different countries. Not only will you find some super unique pieces, but it’s a little memory from the trip that you can take home with you and wear time and time again. I purchased it for about £20 and love wearing it with oversized hoodies in the winter and simple white t-shirts in the summer.
Pro-tip: Everyone loves a statement jacket. Not only do they keep you warm, but jackets can spice up any basic outfit. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt? Throw on a jacket with a fun print and you have yourself an outfit that is guaranteed to turn heads!
Change your thinking on thrifted shoes
Next, I had some really great luck while hitting up my local Value Village and scored two pairs of like-new Zara sandals in the same trip! The first were a pair of black kitten heel sandals with a funky clear strap going across. The second were a chunky pair of black sandals with silver detailing. Some people don’t like purchasing shoes from the thrift store — which is understandable. While you may be reluctant to slip your feet into previously-frequently-worn footwear, you never know what like-new shoes and accessories you will find — some might even still have the tags on.
Thrifting means steep discounts on pricey brands
During the summer of 2018, I had a bit of a quarter-life crisis and decided to quit my job and move to Whistler, BC. Although it was the best time of my life, I did have to cut down on some luxuries — like shopping! However, that didn’t stop me from thrifting. Every now and again I would hit up the local ‘re-use it’ centre to see what goodies I could find. One time I stumbled upon this like-new, cropped white cardigan that was a spitting image to one from Aritzia I had my eye on earlier in the summer. I purchased it for $6 Canadian — pretty good considering the one from Aritzia was about $138!
Thrift away your wedding expense woes
Although weddings are fun, nobody wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a new dress for each one. So, I decided to hit up my local Value Village (it never lets me down). I ended up stumbling across this perfect Banana Republic floral dress. Retail Value? $180. What did I get it for? $7.99. It was the perfect dress to wear for a summer wedding. I threw it on with a pair of my favourite white heels and matching bag and I was good to go! Why spend more money than you need to? Your local thrift store can be an affordable solution for everything from everyday basics to outfits for special occasions!
Moral of the story: give thrifting a try! You never know what you’re going to find. A thrift store really is like therapy for your fashionista soul. And, if you want even more thrift-spiration you can subscribe to my YouTube channel where I upload weekly videos tailored towards thrifty fashion.
