Following the news that singer Aaron Carter passed away at age 34, his ex from his teen years, Hilary Duff, shared a touching tribute.

After the news broke that Carter, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter’s brother, was found dead in his home on November 5 at age 34, E! News reported that Duff took to Instagram with a message.

“For Aaron- I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front [sic] of the whole world,” she wrote. “You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent…boy did my teenage self love you deeply. Sending love to your family at this time. Rest easy.”

Duff and Carter dated on and off when they were both 13 years old, and their relationship lasted for approximately three years. Carter famously starred as himself in an episode of Duff’s show Lizzie McGuire, and he sang his hit “I Want Candy” on the series.

No cause of death has been reported yet for Carter, but Duff is not the only celeb who has shared her feelings on his passing. Paris Hilton, Melissa Joan Hart and other celebs have reacted to his passing, sending thoughts and condolences to his family. Aaron’s brother, Nick Carter, also held a tribute during a Backstreet Boys concert in London on November 6.
