Meredith Grey is officially departing from Seattle. Actress Ellen Pompeo, who has portrayed the surgeon on the hit show Grey’s Anatomy for 19 seasons, is officially saying goodbye.

In a lengthy Instagram post on Thursday, November 17, Pompeo thanked fans for their support over the years. “I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY and the show for 19 seasons!” she wrote in the caption. “Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!!”

Although she might be setting down Meredith’s stethoscope, Pompeo won’t be leaving TV altogether. She previously announced she would step back from the show in order to work on other projects, including a mysterious, untitled new Hulu show.

The door is open for Meredith to return

Spoiler alert: on Grey’s, Meredith had decided to trade Seattle for Boston by accepting a new job offer in order to research Alzheimer’s. And just because the character is in another city, doesn’t mean she won’t be scrubbing back in at Grey Sloan Memorial in the future. “This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit,” she wrote in her caption.

Here’s hoping she’ll pull an Addison Montgomery and pop up for some exciting storylines in the future.
