Have you ever taken the time to sit down and paint your nails, only to have them looking chipped and raggedy a few days later? Sometimes, you don’t want to have to head to the salon to get the perfect mani, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to get a lasting, quality manicure at home. In order to make your manicure last, here are a few tips to remember before picking up a bottle of nail polish.

Jin Soon Choi, editorial manicurist and founder of JINSoon shared some easy ways to keep your mani in great condition with MindBodyGreen.

Start with a clean base

Whether you’re a fan of cuticle oil or you always slather your hands in hydrating lotion, Choi recommends making sure your nail beds aren’t greasy before applying any polish. This isn’t to say you should leave your hands and nails dry and cracked, but simply make sure to clean and dry your nails before putting on that first coat.

Invest in a clean nail polish

These clean polishes often contain hydrating ingredients, which contribute to better nail health, ensuring that your manicure won’t crack due to drying out — which can happen if your polish contains ingredients like camphor.
