Happiness can sometimes feel elusive. We get caught up in day-to-day stresses and let small frustrations take over when things get hectic. But finding that happy place – and staying there – can be easier than you think with a few small tweaks in behaviour and what we like to call happiness hacks that can help brighten your perspective every day. Get ready to feel better about yourself and your life with our guide to attracting more happiness into your life.

Hang out with naturally happy people
Some people just seem to have an air of calm surrounding them, they laugh easily and don’t often get ruffled when things go wrong. These are the types of people that can help you find your own happy place. By surrounding yourself with naturally happy people you pick up on their healthy habits and soak up their positive energy, which can in turn boost your own happiness.

Steer clear of the people who zap your energy
On the flip side, if you want to attract more happiness into your life you need to limit time spent with people who zap your energy with a negative attitude. Think about it: when you’re with someone who complains constantly (about the weather, the service at the restaurant, their job, etc.) how do you come away feeling? Probably not lighter but heavier where your state of mind is concerned. By cutting people like that loose, you can better maintain a healthy level of happiness in your life.

Choose to accept rather than resist
Take note of your reaction any time something happens that annoys you (a friend cancels plans, the grocery store is out of an ingredient you need, you have to work late) and notice the feelings of resistance that come up. It’s those feelings that end up prolonging a frustrating situation. Instead, take a deep breath and accept rather than resist the situation. You’ll find that the happy vibes come rolling back after a setback if you simply accept what’s going on, be it a spilled glass of Merlot on a white carpet or a massive traffic jam on the way to work.

Focus on what you already have to be happy about
One of the best and easiest ways to attract more happiness into your life is to say a big thank you for what already makes you happy. Gratitude is the fastest route to actually attracting more of what you have into your life. So make a point of waking up grateful and starting your day by focusing on what you love in your life, rather than waking up thinking about things like the traffic, impending deadlines and to-do lists.

Take the emphasis off material things– they don’t define you anyway
This is a tough one, but really important when it comes to attracting more happiness into your life. We all get down on ourselves for what we haven’t accomplished yet, the job title we don’t have, the house we can’t afford, the bathing suit we “can’t” wear until the last five pounds comes off. This type of attitude however, strips happiness away like acetone on a gel manicure. Don’t buy into the hype. No matter what happens, who you know, what you do or don’t do, what you have or don’t have, the only thing that can ever make you happy--is you, so make it easier for happiness to flow your way by being OK with where you are right now.

Be open to alternate plans
Happiness gets more elusive when we don’t manage expectations. Having a plan, whether for the day or the next five years, is good and can help us get to where we want to be. But sometimes what looks like a straight path ends up with a fork in the road, or a setback that causes you to backtrack. The more open you are to what unfolds, the happier you’ll end up being with the outcome.

Be OK with change in all its forms
As we’ve all heard at one point or another, the only constant in life is change. That can be tough to swallow but it really is true. When it comes to attracting more happiness into your life, being OK with change is another key. Embracing change (be it an unexpected layoff or the need to move to a new city) will only help you no matter how hard that change seems initially. Happiness flows when you allow life to flow rather than be rigid in your reactions.

Get outside your comfort zone
Being in a rut is one of the biggest roadblocks to attracting happiness into your life. Get out of a rut (or avoid falling into one) by trying new things whenever possible. Travel if you can (even the next town over counts), take classes, attend lectures, meet new people–do whatever you can to stimulate your brain and get fresh perspectives on life.

Take frequent mental breaks
Even the happiest moment can be derailed by an onslaught of overthinking. You know how it goes: you’re walking along on a beautiful sunny day, coffee in freshly manicured hand-- and then the thoughts come. You forgot to take the dry cleaning in, the boss will probably hate the report you submitted, your boyfriend didn’t text his usual “good morning” message. Now all of a sudden, your amazing morning...sucks. Avoid the spiral and keep happiness on your side by taking mental breaks. Even a two-minute meditation can settle your mind and get happiness flowing again.

Love yourself
OK, we know, you might be rolling your eyes at this one. But unfortunately, it’s probably the most important step in attracting more happiness into your life. The minute you start thinking about what you don’t like about yourself you halt happiness in its tracks. The more self-love you can give yourself every day, the more happiness you’ll find everywhere you look.
