There really are no “rules” to fashion anymore, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still a few loose guidelines most fashion-savvy girls like to follow. Wearing whatever makes you feel good should always be your starting point, but be mindful of the following fashion faux-pas that may be distracting from your unique style.

You’re totally uncomfortable – and it shows
Don’t push your comfort zone to the point where you can’t take a step without wobbling to the side because your heels are too high, or fidgeting with your dress because you opted for a revealing cut. You know your body and you know what feels good and fits right. Don’t compromise your comfort in the name of forcing yourself into the current trends. There’s nothing stylish about a great pair of heels on a pair of legs that are about to buckle, or someone who can’t make sudden movements for fear their zipper is about to burst. Stick to what works for you, and remember -confidence is always in style.

I see London, I see France…
Unfortunately, some fabrics are just unforgiving by nature, and others just seem to be cut in a way that leaves you puzzled at just what you should wear for support underneath. Slinky silks mean panty lines, and low backs mean bra straps on display – but they don’t have to! Keep the lines of your ensemble clean with seamless nude panties in the right fit, and for tops in funky cuts, find a style in strapless that works for you.

Don’t be a copy, be an original!
Something or someone else will always inspire your style, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But looking to mimic someone else down to the smallest detail is doing yourself a disservice. Take those looks and make them your own but switching up the accessories or playing with new prints and fits. Inspirational styles should inspire you to find your own way to work the look, not end up dressed exactly like the mannequin in the window!

Stepping out in a mini in sub-zero weather
It’s below zero, and they’re calling for flurries, but you just can’t wait to break out that shorter-than-short mini that’s been sitting in your closet. We get it! But before you find yourself unnecessarily braving the cold and accessorizing that skirt with frostbite; consider a compromise and look to layers for some middle ground. Stockings aren’t what they used to be, and now brands like Wolford offer up luxury leggings that come in countless fits and styles, and are guaranteed to only amp up the volume on those barely-there pieces that you’d like to keep in the rotation.

Trend-obsessed
With every season comes a new batch of hot-off-the-runway trends that send fashion girls and the style savvy alike reeling with their own take on the very latest. Everybody loves trying out a new trend, but don’t go overboard by trying them all at once! Pace yourself and pick a single aspect of your ensemble you want to highlight, working from there and incorporating trends where they make sense.

All about the labels
We totally agree that when it comes to fashion, quality over quantity is the way to go. Some pieces are absolutely going to be worth investing in over the seasons, and odds are you’ll be paying high-end prices for those high-end labels. But don’t lose yourself in labels and forget about the world of bargain hunting; not to mention the fun in testing the waters of fast-fashion! Rocking designer labels head to toe at all times tells the world you lack a little creativity – and restraint! Stores like HM and Zara work each season to offer up the latest in trendy styles at super affordable prices – so save some of that cash and balance out that designer love with some discount finds!

Casual can be cool
While we give major props to our Real Housewives of Toronto, who totally adhere to the more-is-more rule (stilettos on the dock, anyone?), there’s something to be said for more casual ensembles. Not every outing requires a ball gown and a full face of glam, and if you’ve been watching the street style queens of the fashion world, you know exactly what we mean when we say that casual-couture is officially a thing in 2017. So why not give those stilettos a break and pair that dress with some cool sneakers? Or try toning down the full face and instead rocking the barely-there look with a nude palette?

Following outdated rules
Cue the eye-roll when someone tells us not to wear white after Labour Day, or points out that our bag is totally clashing with our shoes. These rules just don’t apply anymore, and you’re doing yourself (and your style) a disservice by paying them any attention. Winter whites, anyone?

Skipping out on the details
It really is all in the details, and a great outfit can really lose its sparkle without the right accessories. A looped belt here, a great pair of earrings there, some delicate layered necklaces… these are the final details that really inject a sense of personality into your look. Take the time to make sure everything you put together truly has your signature on it, and you’ll be turning heads for all the right reasons.

Forgetting the most important part…
It’s all about confidence! Honestly, all it takes to pull off an ensemble is the attitude to go with it. You know what you feel good in, and you’ve taken the time to put things together that speak to your individual style – so rock it! Don’t let a lack of confidence dampen an otherwise killer look, and never let concern for the opinions of others overshadow what you know works for you.
