There are definitely celebrity couples who belong together. Then there are others who make no sense at all. Some classic love stories don’t always have happy endings but that doesn’t make them any less romantic.

Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren, A Countess from Hong Kong
There was no love lost between Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando; and Loren felt strongly enough about it to put it in print. In her autobiography, the actress calls out former co-star Brando for allegedly groping her on the set of their 1967 film. According to Loren, though she made it very clear he should keep his hands to himself – which she says, he did – it was a tense working environment from thereon out.

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
Hmm, they had crazy on-screen chemistry that couldn't be denied off-screen, no surprise, as they co-starred in nine films? The problem with that? Tracy never actually left his wife for Hepburn — which was fine with Katharine, who swore off marriage after her first one failed. As Tracy's health declined, she took a five-year break from acting to care for him and was with him when he died in 1967. Despite the controversy surrounding their relationship, Katharine called it "absolute bliss."

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
Their marriage may have been short but, in theory, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were perfect for each other. Just because they ended things after nine months (let's just say 1954 was both a good and awful year for both) didn't mean they were done. On the contrary, Joe wanted her back and never gave up hope that they would have a future together. He even had roses sent to Marilyn's grave every week for decades, right up until the day he himself passed away.

Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
Reynolds and Fisher, who married in 1955, were a wonderful match — that is, until Elizabeth Taylor entered the picture. Debbie and Eddie and Debbie's longtime friend, Liz, and her third husband, Mike Todd, were great friends. But when Todd was killed in a plane crash in 1958, the couple stepped up to comfort the devastated star. Eddie even moved in with Elizabeth so he could keep an eye on her — and, naturally, that's when it all went to hell and their marriage was over. But, hey, we got Carrie from their union so we can't hate.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz
Their 20-year marriage was passionate but also tumultuous, what with the miscarriage, infidelity, alcohol abuse and all that fame. But even though Ball claimed in her divorce filing that married life with Arnaz was "a nightmare" and nothing at all like how it was portrayed on I Love Lucy, they remained friends until Desi's death in 1986, often speaking fondly of each other.

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
They met on the set of To Have and Have Not in 1944, were married by 1945 and went on to co-star in three more films together. They remained together until Bogart's death in 1957, though we'll always have The Big Sleep.

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard
Gable and Lombard were one of Hollywood's most celebrated couples. He was king of the big screen, she was the queen of screwball comedies, and together their glorious marriage endured for three years, until tragedy tore them apart. On Jan. 16, 1942, Lombard was one of 22 passengers killed in a plane crash. Gable remarried two more times, but he was never the same.

Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra
After short-lived marriages to Mickey Rooney and Artie Shaw, Gardner supposedly seduced Sinatra, who left his wife, Nancy, for the femme fatale. They stayed married from 1951 to 1957, in spite of many well-publicized fights and altercations, but even after their divorce, they remained good friends.

Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks
The silent movie star and actor-director came together not only in marriage but also to form the production company United Artists, ruling the '20s film scene. Despite being married to others, their love affair blossomed and they became the first power couple of the golden age of cinema. But the stress of being such public figures led to their breaking point. They divorced in 1936 and he passed away three years later.

Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren
Loren's affair with Cary Grant came to a bitter end while they filmed The Pride and the Passion. And despite Grant's hope that they resume their relationship, Loren instead agreed to marry Ponti. Twice. The two had two children and remained married until Ponti's death in 2007.

Prince Rainer III and Grace Kelly
They first met at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955, but by year's end, Kelly and the Prince of Monaco were engaged. The "Wedding of the Century" took place one week after she finished filming High Society in 1956 — which would be her last movie role since being an actress was considered tacky for a member of the royal family. Grace retired and dove into her new role as Princess of Monaco. They had three children, shared many sweet moments over the course of their 26 years together before her tragic death in a car accident in 1982. Rainier, who never remarried, was buried alongside her in 2005.
