What is a non-surgical nose job?
Wikipedia describes non-surgical rhinoplasty as “a medical procedure in which injectable fillers...are used to alter and shape a person's nose without invasive surgery.”
The key words here are “without invasive” – as opposed to traditional rhinoplasty, one of the most attractive features of this procedure is the ability to forgo the surgical aspect, as well as the lengthier recovery time post-op.

Who is a good candidate for a non-surgical nose job?
Non-surgical nose jobs are considered very effective at treating common aesthetic nose concerns – things like small bumps, a “hooked” tip and the effects of a fractured or bridgeless nose. However, this procedure can only go so far when it comes to more specific and complex concerns. For patients looking to shorten the nose, remove volume, or achieve a permanent result with less likelihood of maintenance or additional procedures, a traditional rhinoplasty will be the better option.

What is the procedure for a non-surgical nose job like?
Following the initial consultation with your doctor, the procedure itself involves dermal injectables, which, in many cases, can be administered in under 15 minutes. For those patients concerned with pain, many doctors now use dermal fillers that include a freezing agent called Lidocain, which works to numb the area being injected, resulting in little to no pain for the patient during their non-surgical nose job.

What will a non-surgical nose job cost?
As with most cosmetic procedures and services, this cost can vary from one clinic to another, but prospective patients should expect to pay somewhere within the range of $400 to $1,000 for a non-surgical nose job in Canada. One of the most affordable online quotes we found for this procedure in Toronto came from the noted Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, who notes their non-surgical nose job at a starting cost of $400. These costs will also vary, depending on the dermal fillers used and the number of syringes required to achieve the patient’s desired effect.

What are the potential side-effects of a non-surgical nose job?
It is vital to ensure your doctor is using only dermal fillers that are Health Canada approved, and you should ask for these details and assurances at your initial consultation, prior to committing to any services. The side-effects of a non-surgical nose job will vary from patient to patient, but one of the upsides to this procedure is that there is little to no downtime, with very minimal swelling or bruising of the nasal and surrounding area, and minimal painkillers required, if at all. In some cases, patients will return to work or other daily activities immediately after their procedure – as opposed to traditional rhinoplasty, where a patients’ recovery timeline can last several weeks.

What are the risks of having a non-surgical nose job?
While the risks of traditional rhinoplasty are extensive (check out this list by PlasticSurgery.com), another benefit of the non-surgical nose job is the reduced risk for complications typically associated with the more invasive alternative. However, that doesn’t mean this procedure comes entirely risk-free. As with any injectable service, there is always the risk of infection, not to mention the danger in injections done along the sides of the nose, where many end-arteries are located, explaining why so many online resources stress the importance in injecting along the bridge of the nose, minimizing the risk of arterial damage.

How long do the results of a non-surgical nose job last?
For many, one potential downside of a non-surgical nose job is that the results are temporary, versus a traditional rhinoplasty — where the results are permanent. With the non-surgical alternative, patients can expect their results to last from approximately eight months to two years, depending on the dermal fillers used and the rate at which they dissolve. On the flip side, many people considering the permanent rhinoplasty procedure will elect to try the non-surgical nose job route first, as a way to experience the results first hand without having to make the same long-term commitment.

Non-surgical nose job versus traditional rhinoplasty
Ultimately, it comes down to cost, commitment and circumstance when considering a non-surgical nose job over a traditional rhinoplasty. If you are looking for a permanent solution to a specific or complex nose concern, and are willing to pay upwards of $8,500, then the surgery may be the option for you. However, if you feel unsettled by the long-term commitment, high costs or lengthy downtime associated with traditional rhinoplasty, then it may be in your best interest to consider a non-surgical nose job. In either case, there’s no such thing as “too much research” and we’d advice consulting with more than one doctor, to ensure you get all the information you need prior to making any final decisions.

Non-surgical nose job history
If you’re curious about the history behind this seemingly-new cosmetic procedure, you might be surprised to discover the origins of this one go further back than think. According to Wikipedia, non-surgical nose jobs “originated at the turn of the nineteenth-century”, when liquid paraffin wax was used to add volume to otherwise “collapsed” nasal dorsums. However, as noted on Wikipedia, liquid paraffin was deemed ”biologically harmful”. In the 1960’s, silicon-gel fillers would be introduced, but ultimately be proven harmful also. In the following years, advances in fillers and techniques would continue, bringing us to the generally safe and relatively risk-free procedure of today.
