A good rule of thumb when visiting Alaska is to expect the unexpected. The state is peppered with all kinds of interesting and abandoned structures. Old mines, shuttered military bases and forgotten towns. But there’s a surprise waiting on the George Parks Highway near Cantwell, Alaska. It’s the abandoned four-storey Igloo Hotel. And you have to see it to believe it.
The Igloo Hotel
Driving down the George Parks Highway between Wasilla, Alaska and Denali National Park you'll spot the Igloo Hotel.
Sneak Peek
Due to vandalism and safety concerns, the Igloo Hotel is usually locked up tight. But sometimes a door is left open and lucky visitors can pop inside and sneak a peek.
Unfinished
The property has changed hands a couple of times but attempts to finish the Igloo Hotel have failed. The money always runs out.
No Gas
For a while there was a gas station on the site. But it shut down due to lack of traffic.
Low Price
If you've got US$300,000 to spare, you can buy the Igloo Hotel and the land it sits on.
Fixer Upper
But if you DID buy the Igloo Hotel AND you fixed it up, you'd certainly have a unique home in a beautiful part of the world.
