Bringing down your partner so you can look or feel better is a dick move. Your insecurities shouldn't affect your SO; they're the one person with whom you can be yourself and talk to about things that aren't going so well.

Not everyone gets along but if your family is saying rude or disrespectful things about your person, you need to not only stand up for them but you need to tell your fam to STFU. That's the love of your life, they're talking crap about. Also, don't ever ask your partner to "let it go." That kind of talk will have them letting YOU go.

Just because you don't love hanging out with your partner's family and friends, doesn't mean your partner has to give up that time. Suck it up and put in some face time — but not all the time. Let your person have alone time with their people too.

It's one thing to not love your partner's friends but you simply can't ask them to give them up, spend less time with them or ditch them completely. That kind of controlling behaviour won't last long and can be a sign that you're heading for a breakup.

You should know better than to ask your partner to compromise on their values or their faith. It's important to know, understand and support their core beliefs.

Politics are personal and your significant other should know better than to ask you to support a stance with which they disagree if you don't want to blow your marriage.

It's nice to hear what a partner thinks of an ensemble but as long as they think they look good and, ultimately, feel good in it, then that's all that matters. Unless it's a black-tie event and they look like they're going to a barn dance. Then you can say something. Just nicely.

They might be the one person you can say anything to and they're meant to be a sounding board but if you're feeling pissed off or stressed, your partner shouldn't have to feel that wrath. Don't take your crap out on them and better direct that anger.
