The Healthiest Celebs of 2020 and How to Live Like Them
For many of us, heading into a new year means taking the opportunity to rejig aspects of our lives that we may feel need a change. Whether it’s a promise to go for a long walk once a week, or head to a therapist to work out some hard feelings, the passing of the old year into the new is often what we use to help set goals for ourselves.
We're highlighting the healthiest celebrities and showing you how to live like them in 2020. Whether you’re looking for a little inspo, or just wondering how they do it, health and wellness comes in all shapes and sizes — and these celebs prove it.
ZendayaFor fashion designer, actress and model Zendaya, talking frankly about her mental health has made her a champion of caring for one’s self. The star told Elle Magazine in 2019 that she suffers from anxiety even in the wake of all her successes. “I just had too many people I was trying to please, too many opinions, and I was constantly talked out of following my gut and my instinct,” she said. But, the actress says, being able to face her fears head on, and dealing openly and honestly with her mental health have helped make her stronger – and that includes going to therapy. The star’s website even gives fans tips on how to deal with anxiety, including trying ACT or CBT therapies — and offers great advice for those who might be struggling heading into the new year. “Know when it's time to get help,” she offers. “If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed for several weeks in a row, are having substantial trouble sleeping, using alcohol or drugs to cope, seek professional help. Ask your doctor for a referral to a psychotherapist.”
Miley CyrusSince splitting from her (ex) husband Liam Hemsworth earlier this year, Miley Cyrus seems to be living her very best life. And although the singer and actress has always been keen on working out and eating well, for anyone interested in making changes to their routine, Cyrus is one to take notes on. The “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer eats a plant-based, dairy free diet, which has been shown to be better for the environment than meat-heavy diets. She also flexes her muscles with both Pilates and yoga – two low impact, anyone-can-do-it types of exercise that are perfect for those of us with desk jobs. But don’t think the star works out just to get a banging body. Cyrus constantly reminds fans that she does yoga for her mind and not her body at all. So if you’re looking for a reason to work out that’s not “get skinny,” focus like Miley does on her mind first and body second.
Demi LovatoAfter a relapse in 2018 that sent her into rehab, singer and actress Demi Lovato says she’s learned to stop focusing on pushing herself beyond her limits, and to listen to her body instead. "I think it's been a very introspective year for me. I've learned a lot, been through a lot," Lovato told the Teen Vogue Summit in November. Previously, the star says, she would push herself in the gym, restrict her diet and generally stress about herself. But now, she admits, she’s embracing true body positivity, which includes listening to what her body needs to feel nourished and strong, and not forcing it into a bubble. “To be honest, I don't always feel positive about my body. Sometimes I do not like what I see. I don't sit there and dwell on it. I also don't lie to myself," she said, admitting that these days, she truly loves what she sees.
“I don't have to lie to myself and tell myself I have an amazing body. All I have to say is 'I'm healthy.' In that statement, I express gratitude. I am grateful for my strength and things I can do with my body. I am saying I'm healthy and I accept the way my body is today without changing anything."

Ariana GrandeWhen we think of Ariana Grande, we usually think of her famous relationships, her huge vocal range, or her thigh high boot obsession. But how does the singer care for herself? According to her trainer Harley Pasternak, Grande favours lower body workouts that she can do anywhere – and that sometimes only consist of two challenging moves. While the star focuses on lower body (lunges, squats, and hip thrusts for example), she’s not only ensuring that she’s ready for her gruelling tour, she’s setting herself up for mobility throughout life. The movement in a basic squat activates all the muscles in your core, lower back and quads and that will keep you upright and active into old age, and they’re easy to incorporate into your daily routine.

LizzoAs a kid, singer Lizzo says she struggled with self doubt due to her race and her physical appearance. “I had an insecurity about what a star looks like, or what a front-person looks like,” the “Truth Hurts” singer told Elle Magazine. “I felt like I was inadequate; I felt like I wasn’t enough; I felt like people didn’t want to look at me and listen to what I had to say.”
But, since learning how to trust herself and communicate helped her break out of that rut and become stronger and healthier, and she’s spreading her message of self love to her fans. And it’s one we should all be listening to. “If you can love me as much as you do without knowing me, and without me being like this archetype of modern beauty in media,” she told Allure in early 2019, “then you can love yourself.”
Words to live by in 2020 and beyond.

Jessamyn StanleyYou’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard the name Jessamyn Stanley, but chances are you’ve seen photos of this yoga master floating around the internet forever. Beyond her flexibility and down-to-earth advocacy, however, the teacher wants to inspire everybody to love themselves and be healthy without trying to fit into popular beauty ideals. “I want for everyone who believes that they do not have agency, who believes they are not free or they don’t have power, to understand that every bit of power they are trying to look for outside of themselves… you don’t have to do that,” she said early in 2019. “Because every bit of power, every bit of compassion, every bit of love is already inside of you.”

Shawn MendesAre you looking for a challenge in 2020? Canadian singer Shawn Mendes’ workout routine might be just what you need if you’re looking for an intense, strength building challenge. Not for the faint of heart, the Pickering, Ontario native’s routine focuses on circuits, strength training, and cardio. Did we mention it’s intense? Mendes’ routine consists of three parts: an intense warmup that takes around 10 minutes and includes squats, a rowing machine, and overhead presses; metabolic conditioning which includes jumping lunges, a 250 meter row, and something called ‘devil presses;” and sets of sprints. If you’re already strong, and looking to really step outside of your workout routine, this workout might take you to the next level.
Kim KardashianKim Kardashian West has always been forthright when it comes to sharing the details of her life with fans, even when it comes to her physical health. Like her mother, Kim suffers from psoriasis (an autoimmune disease that manifests in dry, painful lesions on the skin) as well as psoriatic arthritis – a form of arthritis caused by psoriasis. While psoriasis sufferers know how debilitating the pain can be in their skin (or joints), it is often recommended that sufferers eat anti-inflamatory diets since certain foods (like red meat or dairy) can trigger flare ups. For Kim, that meant going completely vegan in 2019. The mom of four works to manage her condition by getting rest and taking time for herself because, as she admits, stress and exhaustion can force a flare up of either her skin or joint conditions, so she tries to get enough rest and drink enough water.
Jonathan van NessQueer Eye’s Jonathan van Ness may have become famous for being the grooming expert on his Netflix reboot, but it’s his openness and willingness to speak about mental and physical health issues that have garnered the hair stylist millions of fans globally.
2019 was a big year for the reality star both mentally and physically. After coming out as nonbinary (he/him, she/her and they/them are all welcome by the star), JVN also came out as HIV positive to help reduce the stigma that still exists for people diagnosed with the autoimmune disease. Heading into 2020, the bubbly QE star is channeling his power into bigger things: He’s the first solo non-woman cover star for Cosmopolitan magazine in it’s history and continues to encourage people to love themselves for who they are, regardless of what obstacles may stand in their way — and that’s a mighty healthy outlook for the new year.
BeyoncePowerhouse Beyonce has famously said that since having her three kids, her body has changed, and it may never go back to what it once was. But that doesn’t stop the singer from crushing her workouts. According to her trainer Marco Borges, she focuses on interval training (for cardio) weightlifting (strength) and calisthenics (for flexibility and mobility) to bring Sasha Fierce to life.
And it’s Queen Bey’s healthy mix of self care and self love that we should be bringing with us into 2020, too. Because Beyonce has the same 24 hours a day that we do, and if she can accept herself no matter what, so can we.
Kyle LowryKyle Lowry isn’t just an all-star Raptor and a great dad — he’s also one of the fittest basketball players around. But that wasn’t always the case. Several years ago, the Raptor noticed his weight creeping up and it effected his game, particularly as he aged.
So the MVP of Toronto’s hearts started taking what he called “Extreme Pilates” to help get him into better shape and provide him with more mobility and strength on the court. And it paid off — his team won Canada and Toronto’s first ever NBA Championship earlier this year.
Heading into 2020, we should listen to our bodies just like Kyle. Feeling tight? Stretch it out. Tired? Aim for a daily walk. Making change, whether it’s big or small, can yield huge results, although maybe not a championship ring.

Zac EfronHigh School Musical star Zac Efron might be most well known these days for his washboard abs, but the star’s ability to move up and out of alcohol and drug addiction and only being known as the kid from HSM is not only admirable, it’s a transition anyone who hopes to change should aspire to.
After hitting rehab in the mid 10s, Efron not only transformed himself physically, he’s transformed his career, as well. Going from teen heartthrob to *very serious actor* is no easy feat, but if we take anything away from Efron’s about face is that change can be healthy and good, and making healthy changes in our lives is one of the best ways we can move into 2020 happily and healthfully.

Dwyane JohnsonDwayne Johnson is a busy, busy man. Besides being one of the world’s biggest movie stars, the former WWE wrestler known as “The Rock” manages a gruelling workout regime and shares parenting with his partner regardless of what might be going down work wise.
“There’s gonna come a time, years from now when jumping in my arms is the last thing [three-year-old daughter Jasmine] wants to do and ain’t gonna be cool anymore,” wrote Johnson on an Instagram post. “So I’ll always take these moments while I can.” It’s that slow down and spend time with your kids attitude that many parents might take for granted with our hectic work and school schedules. And while we don’t all have the resources that The Rock might have, even just aiming to get a little one-on-one time with our kids is a great way to kick off 2020.
Jennifer LopezJennifer Lopez celebrated a milestone birthday in 2019 — she turned 50! And she looks incredible. One of the ways she says she stays so youthful is to skip drinking, smoking or having caffeine. Yep, that’s right, la reina of New York cut out pretty much anything that might take a toll on her health and the results have paid off. If you’re looking for a change in the new year, there’s nothing wrong with taking a page from the Grammy winner’s playbook. January is a great time to skip the alcohol or finally kick your smoking habit once and for all. Chances are, you’ll sleep better, look better, and help ward off wrinkles.
Coffee, on the other hand, might be a bit tougher.
RihannaIf you’re looking to spice things up in 2020, why not let Bahamian singer Rihanna inspire you to start cooking with spice. According to the pop star’s personal chef Debbie Solomon, Bad Gal Riri can’t live without seasoning. And not only do herbs and spices bring depth of flavour to your cooking, they can also be great to fight colds, inflammation and even help prevent macular degeneration.
So following in Rihanna’s footsteps and eating well seasoned foods with things like all-spice, turmeric, garlic, cloves and other spices will not only help you break out of any cooking rut you might be in, but they’ll help you ward off sickness, too.

The star’s personal trainer Corey Calliet says that the most important things to remember when starting a new fitness regime is that a healthy lifestyle starts in the kitchen, and that you have to pick exercise or routines that you’ll stick with and love, otherwise you’ll fail at any long term goals you may have.
So get inspired by Michael B. Jordan in the new year and switch up your diet by trying new foods, or cutting out red meat and find some exercise that feels good to your body. Nourishing your body and soul is where it’s at for 2020, take it from Adonis Creed himself.

And how does their whirlwind romance last after a decade? Chris honours and connects with his wife at every opportunity, even in the years he was building the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But it’s a give and take that makes a relationship healthy, and that’s an important thing to remember in building new relationships in the new year. “[Chris] was always trying to be the best dad and has never failed to make me feel like his family is the most important thing to him," Elsa said in 2017. Chrissy TeigenChrissy Teigen may be the most relatable celebrity on earth. But when she’s not working, or trolling her husband on Twitter, the star also works to provide basics to families in need in the Los Angeles area giving people what they need for their babies, and giving of herself, too.
So while Teigen supports charities like LA’s Baby2Baby, her altruism is also helping her. Studies show that giving time, money, or other donations have a positive impact on your physical and mental health and can contribute to a longer life and give us a sense of purpose.
So if you’re looking to build community, meet new people, and find your purpose in the new year, being charitable will help you mentally, physically and emotionally. Which should leave you plenty of time to troll your partner online.
Kate HudsonKate Hudson looks like she does it all. The mom of three, entrepreneur and mogul must have a busy life running everything, right? Yes, she says, but she also knows that life is about balance and finding your balance, though challenging, is a goal to strive for in 2020. “I spent a lot of years [running] on adrenaline,” Kate told Women’s Health Magazine in November. “I’ve always been joyful, but I never felt calm.” So she took a step back, smashed her own expectations, and built her life around what she has now, and what she wants now – not who she was or what people may have expected of her in the past. And its that kind of thinking that can change how we meet the new year and beyond.
