4 Athleisure Styling Tips to Nail the Look

3:27

Just a few years ago, wearing sweatpants to the grocery store would have been a big no-no. Only recently, sporting sweats in public has become a thing — wearing your favourite work out gear anywhere has become one of the fastest-growing trends in fashion. From sweatpants and sports bras to biker shorts and windbreakers, athleisure has become the perfect intersection of style and comfort.

So… what is athleisure exactly? Athleisure is defined as casual, comfortable clothing designed to be suitable both for exercise and everyday wear.

From white sneakers to your most comfortable leggings, I’m going to share with you four athleisure clothing tips that will help you nail the look — and chances are you probably already have most of the items already in your closet!

Sneakers

First spotted in Europe, sporting your favourite sneakers around town has become one of the biggest trends in fashion. From a simple and classic white sneaker to a colourful and chunky ‘dad’ shoe, sneakers are definitely my favourite way of looking stylish without sacrificing comfort. My all-time favourite way of rocking sneakers is to pair a crisp white pair with a cute, floral summer dress. Not only is this super comfortable but it’s a perfect go-to outfit for any summer day. I also love matching a more fun, colourful sneaker with a classic outfit. Try throwing on a classic white tee, a pair of light-wash high-waisted mom jeans, a checkered blazer and a fun pair of sneakers to the office. It’s cute, stylish and seriously comfortable.

While these are personal favourite ways to work the sneaker, there are endless ways you can style them. Try pairing some sneakers with your favourite trousers, skirts, dresses or jumpsuits — and don’t be afraid to shake it up with a little colour. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Go-to sneakers: Reebok Club C 85 ($90) or the Adidas Stan Smiths ($94).

Fun sneakers: Reebok Aztrek Doubles ($140) or the FILA Luminance Sneaker ($84).

Workout Shorts

Workout shorts are not only extremely comfortable but one of the most popular clothing items at the moment. A personal favourite style is a slightly longer spandex short (or what many are calling the ‘Biker Short’) — with a big, oversized t-shirt or sweater. Not only is it super comfy and stylish but also perfect for traveling or running errands. Another way is to pair the shorts with a more fitted t-shirt or tank top and throw on an oversized jacket for an everyday look or blazer for a slightly more dressed up style.

Go-to workout shorts: Lululemon ($64) or The Gap ($45).

Yoga Pants and/or Leggings

Yoga pants are not only one of the easiest and comfiest ways to get around, but if styled correctly, can make you look super on-trend. First, go for an ultra-high waisted pair. They’re more comfortable and also tend to be the most flattering fit. Second, consider finding an all-black pair. They will they go with anything and everything and the dark fabric with elongate your leg and make you look more put together. I like wearing mine similar to how I would style biker shorts — with an oversized t-shirt, sweater or jacket and a cute pair of all-white sneakers.

Go-to leggings: Lululemon ($98) or The Gap ($67).

Windbreakers

Oh, windbreakers! This is where you can have some real fun. Straight out of the ’80s and early ’90s, windbreakers are the perfect way to jazz up any plain outfit. I typically like to pick out a windbreaker that is a few sizes too big. This way, with a quick roll of the sleeves, you have the perfect slouchy jacket to throw on and go. Now, there are endless ways you can style a windbreaker — but here are just a few of my favourites. For running errands or traveling, I like to pair the light jacket with some high-waisted black leggings and a sports bra (if it’s warm) and a hoodie (if it cooler). Another way is to pair a fun windbreaker with a pair of high waisted mom jeans, a simple white t-shirt and a cute pair of black booties. Not only is this super comfortable but the windbreaker acts as a fun accessory for a simple outfit. For a night out with friends, I love pairing a big oversized windbreaker with a simple LBD (a.k.a a little black dress). Throw on a pair of your favourite scrappy heels and its an easy way to look both comfortable and stylish for a night on the town.

Go-to windbreakers: I recommend checking out your local vintage store to try and find a funky windbreaker. Otherwise, treat yourself! Asos ($94) or Urban Outfitters ($49.99).
