These Will Be the Most Popular Baby Names in 2019

Posted by Denette Wilford on February 12, 2019

Not sure what's more surprising: the repeats from years gone by or the newbies. Either way, these are the most buzzworthy baby names parents-to-be might want to choose from. It all depends on whether you want to stick with what's hot or what's not. Here are the most popular baby names for 2019.

    "O," baby!

Looks like "O" is the new power name, thanks to Olivia and Oliver. But there are other Os ready to shine, like Owen, Oakley, Octavia and Ophelia.

Celebrity baby names we wish we thought of first.

    The "X" factor

Now, names that start with "X" isn't that easy, with the exception of Xavier and the popular variation of Alexander, Xander. But, the letter X in names has become quite a big deal in recent years, whether it's replacing traditional spellings (like Jaxon and Beatrix) or not (Axel, Phoenix, Max).

    In living colour

Whether it's a soft shade (Lavender, Olive, Lilac, Grey, Rose) or a jewel tone (Sapphire, Ruby, Garnet, Jasper, Onyx, Amethyst, Topaz), you really can't go wrong.

    Cool kids

Maybe you're new to this whole parenting thing, but for those who have previously welcomed babies and their TV viewing is solely kid-related, then it only makes sense that inspiration is derived from kiddie shows and movies. Ezra, Leonardo, Elsa, Mabel and basically any Paw Patrol character (Skye, Zuma, Chase, Ryder) are all winners.

Unique baby names you won't be able to resist.

    Nature of things

From Willow, Hazel, Autumn and Ivy to Flint, Ridge, Reed and Leaf, to names inspired by animals like Colt, Hawk, Bear and Wolf, considering what you can find in nature, the possibilities are truly endless, says Nameberry.

    Bohemian rhapsody

Peace and Shanti ("peace" in Sanskrit) are becoming more popular reports BabyCenter, while zen-inspired names like Bodhi, Kali, Lakshmi and, yes, Zen are rising in popularity. Then there are the healthy foods like Kale, Kiwi and Clementine and spices such as Sage, Rosemary and Saffron. These names are not only delightful, but delicious too.

    Gender-neutral

While spelling will differ, depending on how much parents want to veer from the classic, you'll be hearing lots of non-binary names by this time next year. Elliott, Finley, Justice, Campbell, James, Robin, Journey, Royal, Story, Laken and Briar are all in the mix, according to Nameberry.

    Westeros-inspired

In this day and age where we're all about empowering our girls, there's nothing like a badass baby name to get that party started. Khaleesi, Lianna and Arya, as well as the Game of Thrones actresses who play some of the characters — Emilia, Maisie and perennial favourite, Sophie — are getting all kinds of love.

These are the trendiest names you'll be hearing soon enough.

    Timeless and old-timey

Vintage names like Archie, Millie, Ace, Spike, Alfie, Hank, Sonny and Billy are making a comeback.

    Yee-haw!

We're entering wild West territory with parents wrangling up names like Clyde, Boone and Stetson for the cowboys, and Jolene, Oakley and Wyatt for the cowgirls.

    Call them by their nickname

Forget the formalities: what might seem like nicknames are what's actually going on birth certificates, according to Nameberry. Mike, Fitz and Theo are coming back for the boys, Ellie, Jules and Jenny are working for the girls and Frankie and Charlie are great options for everyone.

    Short and sweet

Quartz reports that letters have gradually been dropping off of newborn's names since the '90s, so expect to see more names like Coco, Yara, Fi, Eli, Ike and Kace.

    Kardashian and Jenner-ific

This family isn't popular for nothing (well, almost nothing) so it's only natural that their fans not only copy their clothing, hair and makeup, but also their babies' names. Stormi, Dream, True, Chicago and Reign are growing in popularity. And whatever Kim and Kanye name their next child will likely become a frontrunner too.

    Boy and girl meets world

People are finding inspiration in the favourite locations, whether it's India, Montana or Adelaide for a girl and Dallas, Cairo or Israel for a boy.

These will be the most popular names in 2028.

The next best (for the girls)

The top 10 boys' and girls' names have barely changed in the last several years, but that doesn't mean that those that are so close, yet so far behind shouldn't matter. Here are the girls: Ella, Luna, Aria, Ellie, Mila, Sofia, Avery, Emily, Scarlett and Aurora.

Come on, these ones for the boys deserve a chance too! Aiden, Gabriel, Benjamin, James, Jayden, Michael, Alexander, Luke, Carter and Jacob.

    Royally awesome

Directly from the British Royal Family, Philip and Elizabeth, Henry (that's Harry's real name, ICYDK) and Meghan, William and Catherine, not to mention the Cambridges' kids: George, Charlotte and Louis.

Whatever Harry and Meghan name their baby

Whatever Prince Harry and Meghan Markle name their baby will be a top baby name contender for 2019. The usual suspects tend to make the rounds with bookmakers. So, Charles, Arthur, Albert and Edward for a boy and Victoria, Alexandra, Diana and Doria for a girl. The latter two are our personal favourite, just sayin'.

Speaking of the Sussexes, they're totally going to be amazing parents, aren't they?
