Crushed By Love
Songs to listen to as you weep the night away
Sure, love can be grand, but many a time it kicks the living daylights out of you. Here’s a batch of musical band aids that will make you feel not so alone.
Grace - Kate Havenik
This songstress is a fave of the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ post-production crew. “Grace” was featured during the sophomore season’s finale amplifying the scenes between Izzy & Denny. Check out Kate’s album – there’s plenty more where this gem came from.
Best lyrics: Where do I begin? Nothing can bring me peace / I’ve lost everything / I just want to feel your embrace
Missing You – Jem
When the wound is fresh, it’s nearly impossible to see the positive. Turn to Jem when the grief is new and the tears plentiful.
Best lyrics: All the wonderful memories just make me fall apart / And it feels like somebody's stabbed me in my heart
Never Ever – All Saints
We’ve all been there. Been dumped with no clue as to why he left. Take solace in this worldwide hit by All Saints. They may have married rock star husbands, but in their early days, they knew a thing or two about feeling abandoned, confused and unloved.
Best lyrics: I'll keep searching deep within my soul for all the answers / Don't wanna hurt no more
Over and Over – Moloko
Moloko can be kooky, but with this fantastic track from their final album, they prove that they can play the sensitive card. The song’s hero is revisiting her unwanted break up, achingly wishing for her ex to re-establish contact. This track hits where it hurts.
Best lyrics: Some days I question / The suggestion you might not exist at all / Can we meet and talk it over? Would you be kind enough to call? Over and over / It’s over all over
My Immortal - Evanescence
Vocalist Amy Lee delivers a beautiful performance here. Incredibly moving and sad, when you’re ready for a wallow, this song will be waiting for your company.
Best lyrics: These wounds won’t seem to heal / This pain is just too real / There’s just too much that time cannot erase
Missing – Everything But the Girl
Depending on your state of mind, you can either opt for the original version (for more reflective times), or choose the trip-hop remix (for unbridled stalker moments). Regardless, this track is chock full of broken-hearted yearning.
Best lyric: Can I confess / I've been hanging around your old address and years have proved to offer nothing since you moved / You're long gone and I can't move on
I Hope I Never – Split Ends
Known for their fun fuelled poppy extravaganzas, Tim & Neil Finn’s first band was also in touch with their maudlin side. Running into an ex when you’re still raw from the bust-up is never pretty and these guys know the score.
Best lyrics: My urge to cry I have failed to conceal / Life - it's no fun when you’re hunted by the things that you feel
Don’t Forget Me – Way Out West
Have you ever broken up with someone and had to get the last word in? The relationship is dead and buried, but you just felt compelled to leave a parting message? This song was written for you.
Best lyrics: There’s just one thing that I need to feel before I walk away against my will / There’s just one thing that I need to hear before I walk away for the last time / Don't forget me, don't regret me.
