Ask an Expert: Brad, my puppy wets herself when she sleeps!
Q: I have a 13-week-old golden retriever. She has a bad problem relieving herself while she sleeps and she doesn’t even bark when she done so. I’m going nuts! I’ve tried everything! Please help!
A: This is actually quite common. Here are a few tips that should help:
1. No water after 6pm.
2. Take her for a late walk before you go to bed.
3. Implement longer play sessions and walks with other dogs and people.
Understand this is a puppy and not a mature dog. Babies don't know everything about going to the bathroom by 3 months of age, so be understanding. Your puppy does not know about barking to tell you about the pee-pee issue. Exercise and limiting water before bed are very important factors here.
Don't go nuts, stop and see what you can do different. I understand that is challenging but your puppy needs you to be a teacher. Guide your puppy. If you need a good trainer, you can find more information on my website at www.bradpattison.com.
