Cleanse Diets - Fad or Fab?
To say that I have over indulged this summer would be an understatement. Besides putting on a few pounds I just don’t feel as healthy as I did at the beginning of the summer, and I'm not the only one. As friends and I lament over our current state of being, several of us are trying cleanse diets.
For the uninitiated, a cleanse diet is the process of eliminating certain food groups from your diet over a period of time in an attempt to rid your body of any potential toxins. While I like the idea of kicking out the toxins, the diets I’ve heard about range from being extreme to down right boring. One friend is on a 21-day diet that has her drinking two glasses of water every two hours around day 10. Drinking that much water will clean out the toxins of anyone (and for her sake I hope she doesn’t have to be at work on the water drinking day – that could be a little awkward). Another diet I’ve heard of has you eating brown rice and little else for 10 days. I like food way too much to be eating that much brown rice for 10 days straight.
Although I’ve had more to eat this summer than I usually do, I would not consider myself an unhealthy eater. I get my recommended amount of daily fruits and veggies in and I do a pretty good job of balancing my other nutritional needs. So, I have to wonder if you eat a properly balanced diet, is doing a cleanse still worth it? My taste buds are inclined to say no, but the practical side of me is leaning towards maybe.
I’m open to the possibility of trying a cleanse diet, but I need to find one that is somewhat satisfying to my palette. A boring diet will surely lead me to temptation.
