Cleanse Diets - Fad or Fab?

To say that I have over indulged this summer would be an understatement.  Besides putting on a few pounds I just don’t feel as healthy as I did at the beginning of the summer, and I'm not the only one.  As friends and I lament over our current state of being, several of us are trying cleanse diets.

For the uninitiated, a cleanse diet is the process of eliminating certain food groups from your diet over a period of time in an attempt to rid your body of any potential toxins. While I like the idea of kicking out the toxins, the diets I’ve heard about range from being extreme to down right boring. One friend is on a 21-day diet that has her drinking two glasses of water every two hours around day 10.  Drinking that much water will clean out the toxins of anyone (and for her sake I hope she doesn’t have to be at work on the water drinking day – that could be a little awkward).  Another diet I’ve heard of has you eating brown rice and little else for 10 days.  I like food way too much to be eating that much brown rice for 10 days straight.

Although I’ve had more to eat this summer than I usually do, I would not consider myself an unhealthy eater. I get my recommended amount of daily fruits and veggies in and I do a pretty good job of balancing my other nutritional needs.  So, I have to wonder if you eat a properly balanced diet, is doing a cleanse still worth it? My taste buds are inclined to say no, but the practical side of me is leaning towards maybe.

I’m open to the possibility of trying a cleanse diet, but I need to find one that is somewhat satisfying to my palette.  A boring diet will surely lead me to temptation.

I chose to go a cleanse diet, the Master Cleanse (Beyonce did it) to support a friend doing it who wanted to lose weight before an event. I was quite overweight at the time and had been suffering from depression for a couple of years. I had massive headaches for the first four days of the cleanse, and then all of a sudden it was like a cloud lifted and I was myself again. I did lose weight as well, 15 pounds in ten days, but what the cleanse did for me is give me a chance to begin a healthy lifestyle, a clean slate so-to-speak. It's not for everyone (my friend quit after eight days, she felt weak and sick) but as for me, doing a cleanse diet, even though it was extreme, gave me my life back. Just be safe (and if you're doing one that's similar to a fast, make sure to BREAK IT PROPERLY or you could really hurt yourself) and don't expect it to change you. Only you can do that.

My fiance and I did the Wild Rose Cleanse and it was a breakthrough for me. We are pretty healthy as it is, being vegetarian, non-smoking, non-drinking, so the diet wasn't a huge stretch. The hardest thing was cutting out sugar for twelve days since I have a huge sweet tooth.
Also, I was concerned about keeping my energy levels up high enough to continue my twice daily workouts.
Well, I was able to work out the entire twelve days and by the time I passed day three the sugar toxins were out of my body. I relalized how scary it was the my body was so dependant on energy sources such as sugar and caffeine to keep it going that despite the fact the cleanse diet was providing all the calories and nutrients I needed, I still had a tough time those first few days. It was a real wake up call.
Since completing the cleanse, I have stuck to no sugar/gluten/dairy as much as possible in my daily life and I know my health has benefited from it.
Prior to the cleanse, I could not remember a day in the last three years when I did not have severe digestion issues. Since the cleanse, my systems are all "go" and I feel great!
People need to remember - Cleanses are not about quick fixes for weight loss, they are triggers for lifestyle changes that will improve your total body health over the LONG TERM. Results and side effects are directly related to what you lifestyle was prior to the clease - if your body is full of toxins (eg. sugar, alcohol, nicotine) you will probably have a tough go of it as everything "unloads" from your body systems. I think these cleanses are good tools for demonstrating the power chemicals and additives have over our bodies, and how we need to break those chains in order to life a healthier life!
It just makes you more "aware".
